When people talk about vintage glass "bee boxes," they are usually referring to vintage glass honey dishes (also widely known as honey boxes). These covered, square-shaped glass dishes are a fascinating category of Early American Pattern Glass, and mid-century collectibles!
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, honey wasn't always sold in squeezed plastic bottles. It was often served fresh right out of the hive in square honeycomb sections. These glass boxes were designed with exact square dimensions specifically to hold a standard cut of honeycomb perfectly on the dinner table while preventing a sticky mess! (How luxurious!) 🍯
In the 1970s, Indiana Glass produced the honey box for Tiara Exclusives in a few different blue shades, but Horizon Blue is the standout!
🐝 DID YOU KNOW: If you hit this “horizon blue” glass with a 365 UV light it will show you a green manganese glow in return?! If you ever come across this vibrant shade of blue you are looking at a masterclass in mid-century glass chemistry and modern "glow hunting."
If you’re a vintage glass collector or a “glow hunter” this piece WILL be available in the DBR booth this week! Come snag it before it’s gone at Main Street Mall Denison!
