Two weeks ago, this was the last of the nestlings to fledge from brood one in my yard 🐦, who I affectionately named Geronimo. I watched mom and dad coax him for hours to fly the coop. And now, he/she & the siblings are guarding the nest of the 4 family members to be, who are expected to hatch at the end of the month. It is such an amazing gift to be able to watch the cycle of life continue and know that I helped contribute to their success. Nature never disappoints.
The only downfall is that these little dudes eat about 10K live mealworms a week! They know the bird lady will always keep 'em coming 😀

June is National Pollinator Month! It's a wonderful time to show some love to the bees, butterflies, birds and other small creatures that keep our world blooming. Pollinators are responsible for much of the food we eat, from juicy fruits and crunchy veggies to nuts and seeds. They also play a behind-the-scenes role in preventing soil erosion, boosting carbon storage and keeping ecosystems thriving. Adding native plants to your yard, balcony or even a few patio containers creates safe spaces packed with the nectar, pollen and shelter that pollinators need to survive.

(The North American landscape supports many different pollinators. Ask us which species are likely to visit your backyard.)

As a small bird store, we support more than local birds. We support our community!

Tonight I had the utmost honor of presenting scholarships to two outstanding young Kettle Moraine High School seniors: Gianna Sanicola (Environmental Sciences) and Ella Boone (Nursing). I left the event teary eyed with pride for them both, who exemplify extraordinary character and passion for the service that lay ahead of them. These young ladies are exceptional students and exceptional humans.

I am grateful and blessed to be a small part of their journeys ahead. Small business can make a BIG difference.

Thank YOU for supporting local so we can pay it forward 😊❤️

🧡🖤🧡🖤🧡 The ladies have arrived!!

In very quick time, they will begin building their intricate and glorious hanging pouch nests (pictured) in 3 stages: the outer support bowl, the inner structural bowl, and the soft lining.

Typically, it takes anywhere from 7-15 days to build, depending on the weather conditions. Mama does the majority of the work, weaving together piece by piece her work of art. They are the most beautiful nests I’ve ever seen ❤️

‼️Watch for an upcoming video on how to help aid Mama in her process by offering nesting materials!

There will be a big shift in the Oriole’s diet to insects…and live mealworms are a HIT to keep them coming, as they provide a reliable protein and moisture source for the parents and their soon to be family.

And the best part of all, we have everything you need at WBU-Delafield to help them along and add increased joy to your yard!

Have an incredible day everyone and enjoy the birds!

📷 The nest is a photo of an actual Oriole nest from last May 2025 when a tree fell on my house and I found it during clean up!

Another handsome arrival here in Delafield, WI this morning 🖤❤️🖤❤️

The male Grosbeaks arrive first, followed by their lady friends within days or sometimes weeks later.

Grosbeaks love them some jelly as a sweet treat, but their favorite seeds are in the safflower and sunflower 🌻 family. Like cardinals, they tend to prefer a larger perch or tray type feeder. That said, I’ve seen them eat from just about every feeder type in my yard over the years.

Nesting 🪺 habits: Grosbeaks typically build pretty flimsy cup nest in trees and shrubs, generally about 5 to 20 feet above the ground. They prefer forest edges or nesting sites near water.

Every day during early migration is such pure joy🖤❤️ Give a shout out if you see one of our dapper fellas in your yard!
