Layers of Dust is a funky little pop-up shop specializing in natural candles & soaps! I started this business to help pay for college.

Nature has this amazingly magickal ability to heal the body & soul, and the products you'll find here capture that magic so you can take it home with you. The little hobby-hustle has had many twists and turns since its beginning, but I'm so excited by the direction it's going! Living a conscious, eco-friendly lifestyle has been a personal journey of mine for many years, so when I began dreaming up

what this business would become, it only felt right to make that personal goal a part of my mission. A last minute show this last weekend at North Branch's Harvest Festival! Shared a tent with my sister-in-law, who sold her delicious baked goods. While the cold and wind hurt sales a bit, we were just so happy to be invited back again this year. Last year's Harvest Festival was our very first show as a small business, so it holds a special place in our hearts. This was our first show in close to a year, but a start to more in the coming months. I've been sampling soap scents and can't wait to introduce them along side our top sellers. A special thank you to Deana Dhooghe and my handsome husband for manning the tent this weekend while I was stuck at work. ❤️

That's a wrap! I just delivered my final order of soaps this afternoon, and will be taking a much needed break through the holidays! Thank you to everyone who made an order... 🎁🎄Due to the loss of my father-in-law, Layers of Dust will not be doing another event until after the New Year. However... I do have a limited supply of soap for local sales. If anyone is looking for a last minute gift that is unique, sustainable, and practical, my primitive cold-process soap is the perfect choice.

This Saturday, Dec. 4th, Layers of Dust is scheduled to vendor at the North Branch Winterfest Craft fair! My in-law family has had a very rough week with my Father-in-law being hospitalized and put on life-support, so we're all living one day at a time right now. For those who have messaged me about attending the event to buy soap, I will post as soon as I know more and can definitively say we'll be there. Wrapped up our second show today! We had a great outcome. I've had so much fun trying to create these "happiness" smells in my product line in the past few months! I've been experimenting with essential oils and clean fragrance oils to come up with some unique scents I think will remind everyone of the holiday season, no matter how they celebrate it. In researching the origins of the traditional scents of the season, I discovered that spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, and ginger were more valuable than gold in Medieval times, and because they weren't easily available, they were saved for special meals- especial the feast of Ancient Yule. My "Yuletide Fire" soap is rich with these warm, aromatic scents. The crisp, clean scents of peppermint and pine, reminiscent of snow-covered trees and frosty winter air inspire my "Take A Hike" and "Silent Night" Cold-process soaps. Can't wait to share what I've come up with and hope that the scents will bring to life the memories of the season that we all hold dear. -- ✌️&❤️ Ashley Balon

‼I NEED YOUR OPINIONS‼
Hey all! I'm in the process of creating some all-natural sugar and salt scrubs to go along with my "Herbs & Ash Alchemy" bath product line. I'm debating between plastic and glass jars for these scrubs. Because my goal is to be as green, eco-friendly, and zero waste as possible, I am leaning toward the glass which is better quality and reusable, but I worry that customers might fear broken glass in the shower.

What are your thoughts: plastic or glass?

Hello everyone! My name is Ashley Balon, owner and creator of Layers of Dust Creative Co.-- an eclectic pop-up shop featuring natural cold-process soap and aromatherapy soy candles! I started this business to help pay for college. The little hobby-hustle has had many twists and turns since its beginning, but I'm so excited by the direction it's going!

Living a conscious, eco-friendly lifestyle has been a personal journey of mine for many years, so when I began dreaming up what this business would become, it only felt right to make that personal goal a part of my mission. So the LOD mission is simple-- to create quality products that are good for the mind, body, and soul while also being good for the planet.

My idea is to keep things simple. Products made with simple ingredients derived from nature, inspired by old-time recipes developed by our ancestors long before chemicals, preservatives, and over-processing were common practice. This idea... going back to the past and dusting off old tried-and-true remedies and recipes is where Layers of Dust gets it's name. In the future, I also hope to incorporate recycled/refurbished furniture and goods into my product line as an effort to support less mass-production and more zero-waste options.

A successful outing today at the North Branch Harvest Festival. The rain held out, the sun was shining, and I learned so much in my first event. People really enjoyed my soaps and all of the feedback was incredibly validating! My sister-in-law and I shared the tent and supported one another's business ventures, and I'm happy to say she SOLD OUT of her delicious baked goods as well! We even got recruited for other future events. Can't wait to go further in this journey.
