Flies & Lies weekly report 8-13-26

CFS : at Cheesman Canyon dam - 145
CFS : at Trumbull below Brush Creek - 145
Water condition : clear

Flows have dropped to 145 CFS but there’s still good fishing to be had throughout both Deckers and Cheesman Canyon right now. Water temperatures have stayed in a great range for this time of year, keeping fish active. Nymphing and dry dropper rigs continue to produce the most. Fish are spread out in a variety of water, so don’t overlook riffles, pocket water, and the edges of faster runs as the day warms up. Presentation is much more important then fly selection, make sure you dial in your weight and get the best drag free drift you possibly can.

We’re seeing a handful of different bugs hatching depending on where you are fishing along the river, a few Tricos, some PMDs, Caddis and Midges. While hatches are definitely inconsistant, looking in the tailouts, slower pockets, soft edges and bubble lines, you will find rising fish!

Go explore some alpine creeks! We think it some of the most fun fishing you can do in Colorado and right now is prime time for it and a great way to beat the warmer water and crowds. This Colorado River Cutthroat couldn’t resist a tan Micro Chubby, bow and arrow casted into his hole!

Colorado Parks & Wildlife has enacted voluntary afternoon fishing closures for sections of the South Platte river above Eleven Mile Reservoir, including the Dream Stream, Badger Basin, and Tomahawk areas. Anglers are being asked to stop fishing by 12:00 PM to help reduce stress on trout during warm water conditions. We actually recommend calling it even earlier between 10:00-11:00 AM as water temperatures are often already at 65°F by then. That being said early morning fishing, particularly at the Dream Stream has been solid with great hatches! We recommend starting at 6 AM.

Deckers, Cheesman Canyon and 11 Mile Canyon sections are not included in these voluntary closures. Fishing and temps remain good on these three stretches throughout the day! If you have any questions please leave a comment.

We’re super fortunate that despite the recent warmer weather, multiple sections of the South Platte are fishing well and have good water temperatures! Deckers, and Cheesman canyon have been good all day, while the Dream Stream and 11 mile canyon have been fantastic if you’re willing to start early!

If you’d like to get out on the water give us a call or you can book a trip on our website flies-n-lies.com

One or favorite ways to “clean up” a hole after we’ve fished through it is by bouncing a small hopper or caddis on a dry dropper rig. Although any dry dropper rig will work, it’s more effective if you run a heavier dropper like a Blowtorch, Duracell or Walt’s worm and tie your dry fly on a short 2-5 inch tag. When it comes to bouncing it, less is more (watch the video), normally subtle hops and twitches is all it takes!

One of the most action packed and exciting ways you can fly fish, give it a try and let us know how you do! This technique has put quite a few extra fish in the net for us recently! If you have any questions drop a comment or swing by the shop.

Flies & Lies weekly report 7–21-26

CFS : at Cheesman Canyon dam - 200
CFS : at Trumbull below Brush Creek - 200
Water condition : clear

Fishing has been a little more challenging lately, but there are still plenty of fish being caught if you’re willing to put in some work. Flows have consistently been 200+ CFS which is great! Water temps are not a concern if you’re fishing upstream from the town of Scraggy View or in the Canyon.

Fish are holding in all water types right now, so covering water and adjusting your approach throughout the day has been key. Hopper dropper rigs are great for this and have been catching plenty of fish. Focus on pocket water, riffles, and softer edges, don’t be afraid to move around and fish different water types to find what’s working best on that particular day. Nymph rigs are good for deeper slots, we have been keeping our flies very discreet, most days leading with a Caddis nymph trailed by 1 or 2 PMD nymphs/emergers.

We’ve been seeing some good PMD hatches near our shop, up Y-camp road and in the Canyon during the afternoon around 2pm. When the hatch gets going, look for rising fish in softer seams, riffles and back eddies. Caddis will come off in the evening around 6:30ish. With cooler weather and rain in the forecast this week, we’re expecting the fishing to get even better!

An early morning midge hatch had these big rainbows in a feeding frenzy. Are you picking out one fish to target? Or throwing to the middle of the frenzy?

If we could only carry one hopper, this would be it.

The Micro Chubby in size 16 has earned a permanent spot in all of our guides boxes. It’s buoyant enough to support one or even two droppers, floats all day long, is easy to see, and fish go crazy for it!

We fish it everywhere, from the South Platte to small creeks and alpine lakes. Gold is our confidence color, but Pink and Royal are close seconds. This is one pattern you can’t leave home without!
