Stingy Jack is a character from Irish folklore known for tricking the Devil. Because of his tricks, he was not allowed into Heaven or Hell after he died. Instead, he was cursed to wander the earth with only a carved-out turnip lit by a burning coal to guide him. His story is the origin of the Jack-o’-lantern tradition.

After his death in 1991, it was revealed that Dr. Seuss secretly created dark, surreal “Midnight Paintings”, a stark contrast to the playful books that made him famous.

Most people know Theodor Seuss Geisel, better known as Dr. Seuss, for his whimsical rhymes, playful creatures, and colorful worlds that defined childhood classics like The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham. Yet, hidden from public view during his lifetime was another side of his imagination. After his death in 1991, a private collection of what came to be called the “Midnight Paintings” was revealed. These works were far removed from the lighthearted tone of his children’s books. They featured surreal, dreamlike, and at times unsettling imagery, blending elements of fantasy with darker undertones.

These pieces reflected the complexity of Seuss as an artist. While his public work was bound by the conventions of children’s publishing, his private canvases allowed him to experiment freely. They suggest an inner dialogue about mortality, conflict, and the subconscious—subjects rarely associated with his famous literary persona. Some paintings even show distorted architectures and eerie characters that echo his whimsical style but stripped of its innocence.

Today, the Midnight Paintings are viewed as an important part of Seuss’s legacy, revealing him not just as a children’s author, but as a multifaceted artist wrestling with both light and shadow.

An 82-year-old woman went to the hospital with severe abdominal pain, expecting it might be a tumor. To her shock, doctors discovered a calcified fetus inside her body that had been there for over 40 years. This rare condition is called lithopedion, or “stone baby.” It happens when a pregnancy develops outside the womb, usually in the abdomen, and the fetus stops developing but is too large for the body to absorb.

To protect itself from infection, the body encases the fetus in calcium, essentially turning it into “stone.” Lithopedion is extremely rare, with only a few hundred cases reported worldwide. Many women remain unaware of it for decades, and it is often discovered later in life during scans or surgery.
