iving household products in downtown Dayton. Lisa Helm, the Project Manager of Garden Station and founder of Dayton Urban Grown, along with her partner George Shaw opened "DUG, your one stop sustainable living shop in the city" to fill that void at the 2nd Street Market in 2013! In addition to many of the green cleaning products and personal care products that Sally carried at "A Greener You" we added URBAN HOMESTEADING items to complement all the classes we were teaching each year at Garden Station, including canning, fermentation, cheese-making supplies and more, as well as the best books on those topics! When covid closed the market in 2020, Lisa moved all her farmer training classes online and focused on growing food for the community at Dayton Urban Grown Training Farm. This seems to be a good time to transition back home to the Pacific Northwest, So… DUG will be re-opening at 2nd Street Market post covid under new owners! Danielle Pompilio is a beginning urban farmer with a passion for sustainable living. She has always had an interest in environmentally-friendly and local independent businesses, but the drive to make big changes in her choices started when she became pregnant with her first of three children 11 years ago; and had health challenges with her immune system. Along her journey she discovered more information about the environmental effects of toxins in everyday products and conventionally-farmed foods. Nationally, she has worked with organizations to bring healthy products to families across the country and locally has interned with Lisa Helm at Dayton Urban Grown Training Farm before starting her own sustainable farm with her family. Danielle looks forward to meeting new people who share a love of local and sustainable products. You may recognize Dave Brown as he has been staffing Thursdays at DUG since it opened in 2013 and at “A Greener You” before that! Dave has always been passionate about protecting our planet and plans to continue to support that with the products we offer at DUG. He is a member of several environmental groups, including Beavercreek Wetlands, BW Greenways, and the Ohio Sierra Club. Dave was born and raised in Dayton and retired in 2012 as an Aero-engineer at NASIC, WPAFB. He will be staffing DUG on weekdays. Our goal at DUG is still to provide earth-friendly/people-friendly products for sale at a reasonable price, making sure to offer products that are locally produced if possible. DUG will also continue to partner with local sustainable farmers through the Dayton Urban Grown Coop, to provide local sustainable produce and encourage the creation of new farmers. Dayton Urban Green has always been a beacon and source of information to residents interested in green living, and as climate change continues to threaten our world, we hope to continue to provide a more sustainable option.
