What an amazing Monday! And our apologies for running out of book bags and cupcakes. We’ll have more of both at our last summer celebration Monday, August 10th. But we gave away just a hair under a thousand books over the course of the day. Remember every Monday through August 10, kids from newborn through 18 can stop in and pick up any book in the store for free.

How do we make giving free books to kids more attractive? The first year we gave away just shy of a thousand books. Last year it was less than 500. Yesterday, we had fewer than ten children in all day.

We're not complaining-- not at all. We just wonder if we're missing something. Some folks have suggested doing it on a weekend day, but the weekends are already so busy, we don't want the the specialness of it being a day for CHILDREN to be lost in the hubbub.

We offer any book free in the store, plus a little treat if they want-- yesterday it was a packet of Haribo Gummi Bears-- and new this year, a punch card for frequent flyers-- with perfect attendance earing a $10 gift card at the end of the summer. (There will be prizes for less than perfect attendance too)

Do we need to do more? Healthy snacks? Story hour? Next Monday June 15 is the Free Book Fair for Kids when visiting children infancy through 18 can stop in for FIVE free books and a free canvas tote bag.

Hey, look more fanmail on Reddit.  Thing is this guy’s handle leads directly to his real name. I did not have to look it up. Jason Marshall Thomas of “Gem City Strong” believes us to be “attention seeking jerks” because we went to the mat to save our small business. Great way to support Dayton, Jason.

(His comment appeared in support of the new apartment structure that has been built next to 2nd Street Market.)

Oh and hey buddy, did you know that we’re paying a grants of $10,000 each to Preservation Dayton this year? And Threads? And Daybreak? Good thing we survived to do that.
