“Emily Kell is a Boulder, Colorado based artist whose artistic focus is on portraiture and paintings that have an emotional and empowering element to them. Her artwork takes root in ideals of sensuality, the transmutation of trauma, the resilience of the human spirit, and the fabric of myth and mystery.

Through her paintings, Emily endeavors to explore the space between the worlds, and to bring liminal beings through and onto canvas. For the past decade, Emily has been painting people whom she has a personal connection to, in the hopes to reflect what she knows of their being through the lens of archetype.

Emily shares much of her own personal experience of the human journey by way of her poetry, which is written throughout her paintings in a language of her creation. It is her hope that these pieces serve as windows into subconscious realms, and as places of cathartic reflection for the viewer.”

“The Emerald Tablet, also known as the Tabula Smaragdina, is attributed to Hermes Trismegistus, the mythic figure who bridges the wisdom of the Egyptian god Thoth and the Greek god Hermes.

It is said to have been discovered, depending on the legend, in a cave, a tomb, or a temple — engraved in green stone, glowing with eternal truth.

Despite the mystique, the earliest known versions of the Tablet appear in Arabic texts from the 6th to 8th centuries, later translated into Latin during the 12th century.

The Tablet became central to Islamic alchemy, then Renaissance esotericism, and later modern occultism. Figures such as Roger Bacon, Isaac Newton, Carl Jung, and Aleister Crowley all studied it intensely.

‘That which is Below corresponds to that which is Above, and that which is Above corresponds to that which is Below, to accomplish the miracles of the One Thing.’

This is the essence of Hermetic cosmology: the microcosm and macrocosm reflect one another. The inner world of the soul mirrors the outer structure of the cosmos. What happens in the heavens has its echo on earth — and vice versa.

This has profound implications. It means that self-knowledge is cosmic knowledge. To know the self is to know the universe. To heal the soul is to heal the world. And to live in alignment with natural and spiritual law is to open the door to wisdom, harmony, and transformation.”

“In 440 B.C., Herodotus, an ancient Greek writer popularly dubbed the ‘father of history,’ included an account of ritualistic cannabis use in Book IV of his acclaimed Histories. Recounting the funeral ceremonies of a nomadic Eurasian civilization, the historian reports, ‘The Scythians, as I said, take some of this h**p-seed, and … throw it upon the red hot stones.’ When the h**p began to smoke and release a v***r, the ‘Scyths, delighted, shout[ed] for joy.’

Herodotus’ writings represent the earliest textual evidence of cannabis’ use as a mind-altering substance. Scientists have long lacked the physical evidence needed to verify his claims, but a new study published in the journal ‘Science Advances’ is poised to set the record straight once and for all: As researchers from China and Germany report, wooden bowls, or braziers, excavated from a 2,500-year-old cemetery nestled in the mountains of western China bear significant traces of THC, the compound responsible for cannabis’ psychoactive effects.

‘We can start to piece together an image of funerary rites that included flames, rhythmic music, and hallucinogen smoke, all intended to guide people into an altered state of mind,’ the scientists write in the study.”

Scythian Cannabis Rituals: Did Ancient Warriors Inhale Sacred Smoke?
.. The Scythians have often been remembered as formidable horse-mounted warriors, yet ancient texts and modern archaeology reveal a fascinating ritual tradition involving h**p smoke and altered states of consciousness.

This video examines the famous account recorded by Greek Historian Herodotus in his work 'Histories', and compares it with archaeological discoveries from Eurasian burial sites.

We explore the discovery of braziers, residue analysis, kurgan burials, and evidence suggesting that psychoactive cannabis may have been intentionally used in ceremonial contexts.

The discussion places these findings within the broader framework of comparative religion, shamanism, and entheogenic spirituality.

S.E.E.K. investigates history through archaeology, textual analysis, religious studies, and esoteric philosophy, encouraging thoughtful inquiry into the forgotten practices that shaped ancient civilizations and humanity’s search for transcendence ...

Sacred Plants in Ancient Greek Mythology: Moly, Nepenthe, and Ambrosia
.. Greek mythology contains repeated references to substances that alter perception, erase suffering, or confer immortality.

Among these Odyssean encounters with 'moly' and 'nepenthe', as well as the divine nourishment consumed by Ancient Greek Gods called 'ambrosia', each embedded within narrative structures that suggest psychoactive or symbolic functions.

This video explores Homeric literature, mythological commentary, and comparative ethnobotany to examine whether these substances represent actual botanical knowledge encoded in myth or purely symbolic representations of transcendence ...

The Oracle at Delphi: Psychedelic Priestess?
.. The Oracle at Delphi was one of the most influential spiritual personalities in the ancient Mediterranean world.

Dedicated to Apollo, the site was considered a direct channel between human inquiry and divine knowledge.

Pilgrims from across Greece and beyond traveled to receive cryptic guidance on matters of war, politics, and personal destiny, including Socrates, Alexander the Great, and Nero.

This video examines ancient accounts of the Pythia, the priestess who delivered oracles while seated in trance within the temple.

We explore geological theories suggesting hydrocarbon gases or volatile compounds rising through fissures beneath the sanctuary, potentially contributing to altered states of consciousness.

We also analyze the ritual structure surrounding consultation, including purification, sacrifice, and interpretive framing by priests ...

The Dionysian Mysteries and the Chemistry of Ecstasy
.. The Dionysian Mysteries were among the most emotionally intense ritual systems of the ancient world, associated with wine, ecstasy, theater, and the dissolution of social identity.

Unlike the structured hierarchy of other mystery traditions, Dionysian practice often emphasized direct experience of altered consciousness through music, movement, and sacred intoxication.

This video explores ancient accounts from Greek tragedy, philosophical commentary, and historical descriptions of Bacchic rites.

We examine how wine functioned not only as a cultural substance but as a potential catalyst for altered perception when combined with ritual context, rhythm, and collective entrainment ...

The Eleusinian Mysteries and the Enigma of Kykeon
.. The Eleusinian Mysteries remain one of the most influential initiatory systems in the ancient world, centered near Athens and devoted to Demeter and Persephone.

For nearly two thousand years initiates from across the Mediterranean entered a carefully guarded ritual process that promised transformation of perception and insight into the nature of life and death.

A central element of this tradition was the 'kykeo', a ritual beverage described in classical sources. Modern scholars have long debated whether this drink contained psychoactive properties derived from ergotized grain or other botanical compounds.

We also examine how initiation at Eleusis may have functioned as a structured alteration of consciousness, linking agricultural cycles, solar symbolism, and the mythic descent and return of Persephone ...

“Archaeologists in the Netherlands have discovered a Roman settler’s stash of poisonous seeds, sealed in a hollowed-out ...
06/06/2026

“Archaeologists in the Netherlands have discovered a Roman settler’s stash of poisonous seeds, sealed in a hollowed-out animal bone 2,000 years ago.

The discovery is the first evidence that Romans in the Netherlands collected and stored seeds from the black henbane plant, a highly toxic member of the nightshade family.

While the plant has long been notorious for its poisonous effects, it also has a reputation as a medicinal aid and hallucinogenic drug.

Ancient scholars like Pliny the Elder wrote about black henbane’s use as a treatment for fever, cough and pain.

But Pliny also warned that henbane ‘deranges the brain,’ according to a study published last week in the journal ‘Antiquity’.

The plant grows like a weed—and despite its presence in historical records, proving that Romans purposefully collected it is difficult.

This bunch of seeds, however, appears to be purposefully preserved. Its canister—a hollowed bone likely from a goat or sheep—was unearthed in 2017 at the rural Roman settlement of Houten-Castellum in the Netherlands.

The bone is 2.8 inches long, and its contents were kept in place by a plug made from black birch bark… Using other artifacts found at the same site, researchers dated the bone canister to between 70 and 100 C.E.”
