White Unicorn Books

White Unicorn Books Try us, you'll like us. White Unicorn Books is an on-line only bookstore started in October 2001 by Joan and De Wayne White. The dealer was - period! Insurance?

We are an internet bookstore and whether you want used books, out of print books, or books on Science Fiction & Fantasy, economics, theater, or anything else, we are committed to giving you Excellent Service. We started with the Science Fiction collection developed over 40 years. We have continued adding to that collection from various places, adding many other categories to satisfy our customers.

Since that time we have added many books - in fact we add books almost daily. You can write to us at wu-facebook at whiteunicornbooks.com. We at White Unicorn Books like to think of ourselves as one of the types of used book stores we visited and corresponded with when when we were younger. In that day and time, there really was no question about who was responsible for the book(s) after it left the dealer and before it got to the customer. If the book were really hard to replace, the dealer might insure the book. But the customer? Never. Well, I should never say never. If the customer wanted the book insured, he would generally mention it in the letter - yes, this was before the days of the internet, but we started young :-). The dealer and customer might split the cost or the dealer might decide to insure it anyway as a service to the customer. Sometimes a customer was disappointed in the book even after they received it. Again, no questions by the dealer, the dealer took it back and refunded the customers money. If the dealer was at fault, say he had inadvertently mis-described the book, he also paid postage both ways. Otherwise the customer paid postage both ways. In fact, some books were just sent on approval. Now isn't that a strange concept.

Have you read any of the Dresden stories. Many of them were put out by the SFBC in 4 books which collected various stories. They are not too easy too find but we have one of them: WIZARD BY TRADE contains two stories (number 4 & 5) of the Dresden series. Summer Knight is a 2002 New York Times Bestselling contemporary fantasy novel by author Jim Butcher. It is the fourth novel in The Dresden Files, which follows the character of Harry Dresden, present-day Chicago's only professional wizard. In this story Harry get involved with Queen Mab (The Queen of Air and Darkness; the monarch of the Court of the Winter Sidhe, the Unseelie Faeries.); Queen Titania (The monarch of the Court of the Summer Sidhe, the Seelie Faeries.), Maeve and Aurora (The Winter and Summer Ladies of the Sidhe.) and others. It doesn't help that they are not all on good terms with one another and Harry might have to take sides. Death Masks is a much darker story where Harry is in over his head once again, i.e. for one thing he is challenged to a death duel, but as usual manages to pull it all off with the help of his friends and allies. The more interesting thread of the two threads of the story is the theft of the Shroud of Turin and the various factions interested in acquiring it.

598 pages; Fine/Fine. New book. Un-read. This Book Club is the first hardcover edition of this collection of stories. Boards are straight, tips are pointed, spine is square and pages are clean. DJ is Fine! With a tiny bit of shelf rub at edges. In protective sleeve. Fantastic art work by Daniel Dos....

Book Club Omnibus Edition - contains two complete books. "Dead to the World" and "Dead as a Doornail"; 419 pages; Fine/Fine. New. Beautiful book and dust jacket In protective sleeve. Cover art by Julie Bell. An excellent gift! Super vampire reading! Dead to the World: First Eric loses his memory (with some help) and then Sookie's brother Jason goes missing. Both events seem to be the work of a new coven of witches in town. Dead as a Doornail: After Sam is shot in the leg and Calvin Norris is also shot and seriously wounded, Sookie learns that other shifters and were-animals are being shot throughout Louisiana. Calvin suspects Jason because Jason is angry at weres for turning him into a werepanther. Great reading!

or, then again, maybe not. He died dome time ago, one of the items, an April, 1978 Locus fanzine mentions his death and has a small piece about him. So naturally, the only stories of his were written some time ago and he is (was) a very well liked writer. Which means we have sold all the actual books by him some time ago.

This all arises because I'm re-reading a very beat up 1958 ACE Double of his - Six Worlds Yonder/the Space Willlies. The Space Wi***es is why I started on the book because I have a fond memory of it and was in the mood for just that type of book. This is one of his 'humanity-uber-alles' stories where a captured scout pilot deep in enemy territory bamboozles his captures which finally leads to his release to explain why his superiors should accept the terms of "two of their prisoners released for each 'earthman' except fpr the Lathians where it would be an even swap of an earthman and his Eustace for a Lathian and his W***y.

Six Worlds Yonder is six of his stories collected from Astounding Magazine. I've just finished two of the stories, The Waitabits which is reported by a scout for the Terran Empire as "Unconquerable"; Tieline about a member of the Becon Service and how he copes with the loneliness of being the only person around for maybe light years in any direction.

I can recommend the book wholeheartedly. The cover of the '58 ACE Double

Humans, goblins, dwarves, and other creatures such as hell hounds along with a bit of science fiction and you have a Clifford Simak story. This particular one starts with a rafter goblin spying on a student at a university in a world which has not lost its magic. The theft of a manuscript by the student Mark leads to a quest to find the Old Ones with him, Gib (who has a quest of his own that fits in), Hal, a friend of Gib, Hal's friend the c**n, and a few more they pick up along the way including the rafter goblin.

If you like fantasy or a mixture of science fiction and fantasy, I think you will find this book a very good read. Sometimes the writing isn't the sort which makes for a great novel in the technical sense but the entertainment is always there. I'm reading it for at least the third time since it came out around 1975. The cover is, I believe, the cover of the book club edition and also the Berkley paperback i'm re-reading. You can find Enchanted Pilgrimage and other Clifford Simak books on our site at http://www.whiteunicornbooks.com/?CLSN_570=152416568357085621f136a5461015bb&keyword=simak&searchby=author&page=shop%2Fbrowse&fsb=1&Search=Search

That didn't get much response so we'll try something else. It has been a long time since I've done any reviews and an even longer time since I've updated our original page http://www.whiteunicornbooks.com/home/wu-bookreviews.html The page was started because I enjoyed reading and reviewing the books. I still enjoy the reading but, even though I have reviewed a few books since the last one on that page, I haven't kept the page up. Would anyone be interest in seeing it kept up.

Note that the page was started well before there was the formal term 'blog' for pages like this. Quit a few of the pages on our site are like this but I have had difficulty keeping them up. Can't really say I will do that on a more regular basis in the future but is is possible :-)

Let's try to get a response: How often do the 'businesses' you look in on post something? How often do they post 'interesting somethings'.

We lost a great person today, Ursula Le Guin. What can you say about her that hasn't been said? Possibly best know for her Earthsea series, http://www.ursulakleguin.com/ for a map, [], but actually had this to say (in part) about the Miniseries - "When I tried to suggest the unwisdom of making radical changes to characters, events, and relationships which have been familiar to hundreds of thousands of readers all over the world for over thirty years, I was sent a copy of the script and informed that production was already under way."

Her "The Left Hand of Darkness" & "The Dispossessed" made her the first person to win both the Hugo and Nebula Awards for Best Novel twice for the same two books. If you haven't read them, you have missed two great stories. She has also written 'stories to read' - that is enjoyable stories which weren't classics but, still & all, enjoyable reads & re-reads.

We will miss her.
