THE STORY

The Puzzled Co was started by Philip Einsohn a former school teacher with a degree in Early Childhood Education from The University of Texas at Austin. In 1977, Philip launched a hand-cut wooden puzzle company in response to the lack of learning-based puzzles observed during his time as a post-grad Kindergarten teacher. Philip's love for puzzles easily translated to his second career as

an expert in custom waterjet design for commercial & residential application. In 1999, he launched Waterjet Works, a design and fabrication studio built on the foundation of using waterjet technology to precisely cut a variety of materials from carpet & LVT to glass & metal, stone and porcelain.

Thanks to the speed puzzlers who tried a new perspective with our tactile art Puzzles for EveryBody. What would it be like to assemble a puzzle without your sight? The fastest folks in the game slowed it reaaaaal down and found out. It’s remarkable to observe someone’s brain in action while puzzling. Thanks to for featuring tactile puzzling at National’s again this year. We got great feedback which helps us grow and learn to design towards our goal of making the joy of puzzling a little more accessible. Cause it’s so fun to play together!

Poem: Before the Applause by Jay Writes

Painting: The Inner Voice, from the tryptic watercolor series Reasons We Strive, by Richard Samuel, 2026

Artist Richard Samuel created Reasons We Strive, a three-panel exploration of human ambition — a visual meditation on the layered motivations that push us forward even when the path feels uncertain. Each canvas represents a different force behind our pursuit of greatness, revealing that striving is never powered by just one reason, but by a dynamic intersection of desire, love, and recognition. The first painting in the series, The Inner Voice, is featured in this special puzzle art edition.

Together, the triptych of watercolor paintings suggests that our striving is rarely singular. We move forward because of who we are, who we love, and how we wish to be seen. Reasons We Strive invites viewers to consider their own motivations — and to recognize that ambition, in all its forms, is a layered and deeply human experience.

Jonathan Ezemba, also known as Jay Writes, is an author, multidisciplinary performing artist, and event curator. Jonathan is an advocate for liberation through self and collective expression. He verbally illustrates the beauty within community, struggles with identity, and reflections on his own experiences and the world at large.

Feeling like a waterjet cut Thundershower Puzzle kinda day. Yup, that means this puzzle is also waterproof and can be assembled in the rain or in the shower! Thanks to our friend for the pics.

In the early 1900s, H. Lyman Saÿen was an engineer and inventor in Philadelphia known for his work on the first X-ray machine. After studying painting in the U.S., he went on to learn from Matisse in Paris and joined Gertrude Stein’s circle. His curiosity can be seen in this collage-like study for one of his final paintings The Thundershower. In this work, two figures move fluidly like the frames of a filmstrip with a European Cubist-like approach contrasted by bold patterns influenced by the pottery and textile designs of the Indigenous communities in Pennsylvania. Saÿen died in his early 40s at the brink of the Machine Age and before the impact of his work could really take root in the history of art.

In 1970, art critic Hilton Kramer, The New York Times, responded to seeing Saÿen‘s work for the first time:

“The history of European and American avant garde in the early years of this century is so familiar to us in the routine chronologies of museum collections, art books and college courses that we tend, mistakenly, to believe there are no more discoveries to be made. And then, out of the blue, we are obliged to confront a new name, a new career and a new oeuvre of whose existence we had never had an inkling.”
