Although tempting - don't skimp on the mineral program this winter.
Winter mineral programs are critical. Why? Because in late gestation, cows must support their own mineral needs PLUS build the developing calf's liver stores. After calving, the calf can get some macro minerals from milk but does not have a source for a majority minerals outside of liver stores. With that in mind, winter mineral specific tips include:
1️⃣ Monitor intake! It is not uncommon to see a drop in mineral intake in the winter – this does NOT mean requirements drop. Compare mineral disappearance to the target intake listed on the mineral label. Salt, feeder placement, and other strategies can be used to reach target intake.
2️⃣ If feeding silages, dirt contamination often includes iron, which is an antagonist for multiple minerals. For example, additional manganese, copper, and zinc supplementation may be warranted while feeding silage.
3️⃣ Pay attention to Ca:P ratio, especially if utilizing co-products in the diet. Additional calcium is often beneficial when significant levels of distillers or other co-products are fed. On the other hand, diets without corn or co-products, may warrant additional phosphorus.
4️⃣ Consider shelf life. If buying mineral in bulk, it's worth remembering that Vitamins A, D and E oxidize in the mineral mix, and the shelf life is generally considered
