I’ve been in a reflective headspace this week. Looking through old photos and videos for our shopiversary, I found one of our son—now 6— taking some of his first unsteady steps (ok fine, I’ll share).

This first photo is our grand opening; the plant on the front table, a gift. Today, it’s four feet tall and thriving in a sunny corner of our home.

For whoever needs the reminder: it’s okay to start small. Most things in life do.

I’ve been working with a friend who’s preparing to open a restaurant in Redlands (—follow her!), and she’s been talking through her dream menu, future goals, and doing the hard work of scaling it back to what’s wise for year one.

It reminded me how easy it is to feel like we have to come out the gates with everything figured out—or not come out at all.

I do generally believe the adage that healthy things grow. Not all at once. Growth takes time—but it’s almost inevitable when you’re focused on what supports and nurtures it.

So here’s to small starts, bare-bones beginnings, and the quiet work of tending to what matters.

Today marks eight years of Hearth & Sage. For this anniversary post, I wanted to share a thread from our story—about a dog named Mazzy and a guy named Jeromy.

We adopted our pup, Mazzy, in 2016, just before leaving LA for the mountains. She had severe separation anxiety, so in early 2017, while we were building out the shop, she was right there with us—stepping in paint trays and freaking out at sudden noises. On ribbon-cutting day, I’d been holding her as people arrived, and when it came time for the photo op, I looked around—somewhat anxiously—for someone I could hand her to, and then I saw Jeromy. He was a kind new friend and one of the few people Mazzy had taken to outside of us.

Eight years later, Jeromy is not only a dear friend—he’s now managing so much of the day-to-day at the shop. He’s someone I’ve always trusted with what matters most, and we’re lucky to have him helping us take Hearth & Sage into this next chapter, bringing decades of experience in retail and beauty with him.

This shop has brought the most incredible people into our lives—makers, customers, and so many friends—and truly rooted us in this community. We’re so grateful for your support. Thank you for shopping small and being part of our story. Here’s to eight years!

Also—Mazzy is doing so much better these days. The serenity of the mountains has been good for her. Well, for all of us. 🖤
