Permanently closed.

Kalapuya Books opened its doors in 1997 in the little store next to the Cottage Grove Hotel on the corner of 9th and Main in the heart of our historic downtown. Hal and Betsy Hartzell lived in a little apartment above, with the trains rumbling by at night. In 2006, the store moved to its current location in the historic Burkholder Woods building with the community pitching in to form a “book briga

de,” passing the store’s entire inventory hand-to-hand down the street. Before moving to Cottage Grove, Hal and Betsy worked at a Eugene based publishing collective for a few years. They saw book sales on the internet as an opportunity to make retail in a small town be more viable. With a degree in English literature, running a bookstore is a natural fit for Hal who is also the author of The Yew Tree: A Thousand Whispers and Birth of a Cooperative, which tells the story of his time working as a tree planter with the legendary Hoedads and how they formed their enterprising collective. Betsy was a registered nurse, working over-time on the night shift when some family money shifted their way, and Kalapuya Books became a reality. The store is not only their business, but their home as well. A home which they share with the community-at-large, hosting the monthly Poetry Night at the Axe & Fiddle as well as a weekly social gathering called Bread Club on Thursday evenings. Betsy finds their lifestyle… living above bookstore in a community that is constantly reinventing itself in wonderful ways to be more fulfilling than she could have imagined. Both she and Hal cherish their daily interactions with the residents of Cottage Grove, friends, family members, and customers who drop by the store – all part of the day’s work at Kalapuya Books. So, stop by and get acquainted, make new friends, peruse the amazing flea market finds and local artist’s work on consignment which Betsy turns into an ever-changing collage of treasures, and of course… find the perfect book.
