Some people know that in a past life, I was a birth educator and doula. I left that career because it was so hard to battle the patriarchal system that is OBGYN care. I tried to fight the system yall, my health suffered. It was a very challenging era of my life. So when I see books that are geared towards empowering people to have the birth they desire and deserve, I snag it. Can’t wait to dive into this!

A native of Odesa, Ukraine, Natalya Sukhonos is multilingual, speaking Russian, English, as well as Ukrainian, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Italian. She holds a PhD in Comparative Literature from Harvard. Natalya is a poet, scholar, and teacher deeply committed to the power of language to uplift, inspire, and defamiliarize us from the ordinary. Nominated for the Pushcart Prize in 2015 and 2020 and the Best New Poets Anthology of 2015, Natalya came out with Parachute in 2016 (Kelsay Books of Aldrich Press) and A Stranger Home (Moon Pie Press) in 2020.

About her book, Sunlight Trapped in Stone:

Journeying into the speaker’ s immigrant past as well as the stories of others, we wander in the fields of war-torn Ukraine, the stones of Guadalajara, and the frigid shores of Halifax during World War II. Roaming through rain-soaked forests, treacherous deserts, and the whimsical architecture of childhood, we hear voices of immigrants, refugees, and lovers, children yet unborn and those sprinting to their next adventures, mothers and fathers, grandparents both wise and defeated, adolescents luminous with wonder and paralyzed by their own bodies. How does poetry cradle a sea of voices? Ensconced in the amber of memory, how do they emerge full-blooded and speak to us with urgency?

New shelf alert!

June is Alzheimer's and Brain Health Awareness month and this one is super close to my heart.

In collaboration with the Alzheimer's Association, Rochester & Finger Lakes Region (), Maria and Ted Goldwyn currated this shelf and dedicated it to 4 amazing parents - Maria's mother, Patricia Davis; Ted's father, William Goldwyn; Sue McMaster's (Southern Tier Program Manager for the Alzheimer's Association) mother, Kathryn Bury; and my (Bethany's) mother, Mary McCarey. Each one of these people has been deeply impacted by Alzheimer's or another form of dementia, and this shelf exists in honor of their stories and the countless families walking this road every day.

There are books for everyone on this shelf - kids and teens, caregivers, and anyone who wants to learn about Brain Health. A portion of the proceeds from this shelf will go directly to the Alzheimer's Association. And since they have been such a huge helo to myself and my family this past year, I will personally match the donation.

Stop in a read what the Goldwyn's have to say, look at Maria's artwork from her installation called "Our Mothers' Memory Keepers, and pick up a book today!

Hey guys - my mama took her final breaths yesterday afternoon.

I want to thank everyone for their kindness and understanding these last few months.

The store will be closed today, but I will be back tomorrow. In creating a safe place for the community, I’ve created a safe, happy place for my self in the store and am excited to be back with you all.

Thank you all.

💜 Hey y’all.

Card Carrying will be closed today.

My mom has entered the final stage of her life, and right now my place is with her and my family. Thank you for your patience and understanding while I take this time.

We do plan to be open tomorrow, and Cori will be at the shop to help you with all your book and gift needs.

Thank you for the kindness you’ve shown my family over the past few years. It has meant more than you know. 💜

Hey y’all…

It’s Sunday, June 14th and we are closed today.

The last two Sundays that we’ve been open have been quieter than quiet and with all that I’ve got going on at home with my mama…I’ve decided that everybody needs to take today and rest.

I love you all and will be back open Monday at noon!!

The 7th Annual Corning Pride Festival was amazing! Every aspect of it was just perfect. I want to give some shoutouts…

soflxpride - wow. You really know how to put on a celebration! Thank you for all that you do for the community!

- oh my gosh. Seriously. You are an inspiration to me and so many other people. You make this city such a bright place and I consider myself lucky to be a part of that.

- you are the hero of the day. Thank you for covering the store so that I could be out (pun intended?) on the street representing Card Carrying!

- I did not get a change to meet you personally - the day was so busy- but girl, you slayed!!! And you are absolutely stunning!! Thank you for hyping Corning up all day!!

To all the cake bakers, Servers and bidders - you all rock!! The 2nd Served was even campier and fun than last year. And you told the local youth today that you see them and love them! $2300 was raised for Camp Fruit Fly!

To all the people who stopped into the store, said hi, made a purchase and supported the store. It’s days like this that I feel the love and am so honored that you continue to keep me and the store around.

And to my community, my hometown - thank you for being you and for showing up! I’m born and raised here and continue to be so proud to be here.

Ahhh - I love this city!!!
