Lonicera caerulea 'Blue Velvet'
Honeyberry

Here’s something fun and a little different. Utah is not an ideal area for growing blueberries, but honeyberries can grow here. This late blooming honeyberry features blue-green leaves, small, light yellow flowers that bloom in spring, and edible, oblong, blueberry-like fruits that mature in the summer. If you want to harvest fruit from this honeyberry, be sure to plant it in groups with a different honeyberry variety. 'Blue Velvet' is not self-fertile and requires a different honeyberry cultivar with a similar bloom time for cross-pollination. Suitable pollinator partners include 'Blue Moon' or 'Blue Pacific'. Plants begin fruiting 2 to 3 years after planting. The berries ripen in late May or June. Because of our hot, dry summers here in Utah, your honeyberry will perform best with morning sun and dappled afternoon shade. If you want to harvest berries, remember that this plant will attract birds and deer, so plan accordingly. It’s hardy to zone 2, so it will thrive even in high elevations. It prefers full sun and well-draining soil, and tolerates water from Utah Lake. Unlike some other honeysuckle species, this shrub is Non-invasive, growing to an ideal size of 3 feet tall and wide.

Juniperus conferta 'Silver Mist'
Silver Mist Shore Juniper

This low-growing, dense evergreen shrub brings an element of year-round interest to your yard. It’s prized for its striking foliage. The new growth is a silvery-blue-green, with the needles having broad white bands that give it a "misty" or frosted appearance. The foliage may develop a coppery-purple tint in the winter. Once established, Silver Mist Shore Juniper is exceptionally drought-tolerant and has very low water needs. It will reach 18 to 24 inches tall and up to 9 feet wide, so it offers great coverage in larger spaces. It offers ideal protection for birds such as quail and other small animals. It is important that the soil is well-drained, as constant soggy or wet soil can cause root rot. This plant is hardy to zone 6, so it’s best planted in lower valleys where the winter temperatures are more mild. Deer resistant.

Clematis 'Evipo 063' Corinne™
White with Pink Clematis

This compact-growing vine will bring a burst of contrast to your yard with its dense foliage and white blossoms. Large white flowers with ruffled edges have a stripe of purple-pink through the center of each petal. Keep in mind that clematis do best when their roots are cool and shaded while the foliage gets ample sun to provide energy for blooms. You can create those conditions by placing large stones near the base of the plant near the trellis or by planting small shrubs or perennials around the base of the clematis to keep the roots out of the sun. This vine grows in full sun to part shade and will reach approximately 6 feet tall. It attracts pollinators, is surprisingly deer resistant, and tolerates water from Utah Lake.
