On this day in 1989, Tove Jansson celebrated her 75th birthday on the island of Pellinge in the Finnish archipelago. For decades, this was her preferred lifestyle every summer: no electricity, no plumbing, just the sea, the rock, and the work.

The Moomins may have made her famous, but it was places like this that made her Tove. In Finland, August 9th is a recommended flag day, celebrating Tove Jansson and Finnish art.
