7mm Backcountry experiences and review:

We just started doing some 7mm Backcountry (will call it 7BC for short), we have the reamer and tools to chamber these barrels. Started with a barrel that was pulled from an Fclass comp rifle with 1100 rounds through it; it is a Brux 9tw 4G 1.250” straight cylinder barrel. It was thoroughly cleaned, we cut 6” off the breech end, and recontoured it down to a Heavy Varmint. Chambered it in 7BC and threaded the muzzle 3/4-24 at 24”. This barrel was installed on a short action 308 bolt face deviant from Defiance Machine, and we have been shooting it single shot only. Started out with the Federal 170 grain Terminal Ascent to zero and start shooting it a little. The 170TA shot around 1MOA and 3110FPS with ES’ in the high 40s. It was a little erratic but the numbers settled down some after 20-30 rounds. Velocity stayed the same but the ES’ dropped to 25-30. After cleaning, we switched to the 175 grain Fusion Tipped to look for more accuracy, and we found it here. The 175FT was averaging 3060-3070FPS and was shooting 1/2MOA on average. This is an 80K PSI load that is achievable though a special alloy case that Federal calls “Peak Alloy Technology” I believe. It was represented as less bolt thrust and less recoil, among some other things; I was skeptical. some general findings that I will share before showing results:

-the 175FT shot remarkably well for a factory loading, averaging 1/2MOA out too 500Y
-the recoil IS noticeably lower than expected. I was shooting with a full sized 30cal can and perceived recoil was less than a 308Win. I have no idea how this is happening, but everyone who shot it said the same thing
-there were a light “clicker” with the 170TA load, maybe 1in 10 shots. There was 1 light clicker with the 175FT load in 50 shots fired
-barrel seems to be fouling with carbon a little fast, but it was a used barrel so I can’t be certain this is an issue
-overall I am impressed as this offers a real solution for hunters that don’t reload. All in all I wouldn’t reload for this considering how well the 175FT load shot

We got some barrel samples from Custom Rifle Barrels that are performing well. A premium, cut rifled barrel made in Hammond, OK.
I’m 100 rounds in, this is the first time at 1010Y. This is a 6.5x47Lapua
Load for my existing 47, 5 shots 130hybrid 2.75”(4 shots 1.5”). 3 shots 140VLD 2.75”
