Tonight marks the new moon of Anisguti, the Cherokee Planting Moon.
In Cherokee tradition, May is when the work turns to the earth. Corn, beans, and squash go into prepared ground in a careful order. These are the Three Sisters, and they grow together because each plant supports the others.
Corn gives the beans a stalk to climb.
Beans return nitrogen to the soil.
Squash leaves shade the ground and keep moisture in.
The Corn Dance was performed during this season, honoring the turning and asking the months ahead to carry what had been planted through to harvest.

Planting is patient work. You prepare the ground. You plant in the right order. You wait. You tend.

This day serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent work still needed to ensure safety and justice for all our relatives. We stand in firm solidarity with the families seeking answers and the survivors finding their voices.

Violence Against Native Women by the Numbers: More than 4 in 5 Indigenous women have experienced violence in their lifetime. Murder is the third leading cause of death among American Indian and Alaska Native women. The red handprint symbol represents the silent voices of our sisters who have been taken.
