There are those who make things for the sake of selling them. I enjoy most creating things that I hope are meaningful for a lifetime.

Driftwood as a medium to do that holds so much symbolism for me. It’s something that has survived the challenges of nature, and overwhelming odds to be found. In it I see beauty, potential, and something unique that can’t be duplicated.

As much as I would love to become independently wealthy doing this, I know that doing something meaningful for others is both more satisfying and rewarding.

The piece shown here is much more than an inspirational message. There are many years of struggling against so many odds for the person inscribed. Most people will never have to fight or suffer as hard as she has. Sondra was a big part of working to help her survive and overcome, as she did with her own son- against all odds.

People go to movies or sporting events to experience their heros. I am honored to have an actual hero right here in my life.

Something for Dad… name of our road with GPS coordinates to the house he built with my grandfather where he started our family. Driftwood is a great medium to work with, my favorite. Symbolically it’s been through hell and back, beaten by rocks and waves yet survives. Each piece is unique- not cut from a board you could purchase at any lumber store but weathered and worn by nature to reveal its natural beauty. Each piece is carefully chosen, sometimes waiting days, weeks or months for the right inspiration to be engraved on it. Once complete, there’s no special treatment required to display it either indoors or outside. It’s lived in the elements- it’s at home there.

While talking to one of the owners of the Broad Street Beach Shop, she told me about how she had purchased a driftwood coaster from me at a local trade event last year. She said it was her favorite, and kept it behind a bar so it wouldn't walk. Guess what? It walked anyway. She described it to me and I made her another one- with a warning on the back. :D
