We are the Book Barn, located in the old firehouse. Saturdays at the Book Barn are filled with encounters of fascinating people, stories, and the occasional coincidence. On these days, we often ask our patrons about their visit. Many locals express surprise, admitting they didn't know we were here, while others from nearby towns and as far away as the Midwest, East Coast, and even abroad visit for family reunions and other occasions.
Some come seeking a specific book, and there's excitement when they find it on our shelves. I recall Juan Portillo looking for a Michener book that his extensive search yielded nothing. Two weeks later, we discovered it mysteriously on the floor. Nobody knew how it hit there.
We diligently handle book requests, like the lady in Kerrville searching for any book on Lincoln for a family member; we happily call her, and she often picks it up the same day.
Recently, an editor from Simon & Schuster specializing in children's books visited our historic bookstore and left with a few gems from our collection. We cherish our repeat customers, recognizing them individually, like the true crime aficionado in San Antonio who, with his parents, stops on their way to a thrift store in Ingram monthly.
New residents often delight in discovering us.
We especially look out for requests from The Boys and Girls Club.
We're located at 633 Main, across from the Tinsmith’s Wife, and operate on a donation-only basis.
