This Mental Health Awareness Month, ICJA is drawing attention to the deep and often underaddressed connection between mental health and the justice system.

Three in five people with mental health conditions do not receive treatment. Seventy percent of youth in the juvenile justice system have a diagnosable mental health condition. And two in five incarcerated individuals have a history of mental illness, with rates reaching 37% in state prisons and 44% in local jails.

These numbers reflect a systemic gap that community justice organizations are positioned to help close. Redemption, recovery, and resilience are possible when people receive the support they need.
