Tara recommends What Am I, A Deer? by Polly Barton 🎤🦌

"A young woman moves to Frankfurt to translate games for a large company where she becomes obsessed with a man who returns her lost umbrella & takes feverish solo trips to the karaoke bar. With meditative care & nuance, Polly Barton captures the complex paradoxes of modern living & asks what it means to escape, to lose yourself & find yourself again and again. Biting funny, and cool!"

We were so thrilled to welcome Gerrick Kennedy to Prologue Bookshop last night, in conversation with our very own bookseller Jonathan! They had a great discussion about working with Brandy on her memoir, Phases, which Gerrick co-authored. Copies of Phases are available for purchase at the store.

Kenza recommends Duels by Néhémy Pierre-Dahomey!

"After the enslaved people of Haiti successfully revolted against & threw out their enslavers, they were made to pay France for the next 122 years. It was a debt for the greatest crime colonizers could imagine- the crime of Black freedom. In this novel, we enter the lives of everyday people living in the aftermath of the Haitian Revolution, whose fates are inextricably tied up in it. Duels is dryly funny, deeply moving, spiritual, ancestral, painful and beautiful all at once. An incredible read!"

Abbey recommends The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie 🔎

"There's not an author dead or alive who writes twists like Agatha Christie- and this book contains my favorite of them all! In The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, the Belgian virtuoso private detective Hercule Poirot investigates the murder of a wealthy man in a village peopled by delightfully idiosyncratic characters & peppered with red herrings. If you love mysteries, take a stab at this one (pun intended!) and- as Christie wrote- 'be of good courage, and place your faith in Hercule Poirot.'"

Some of our favorite picks for Mental Health Awareness month 💚

Tired of self-help platitudes and toxic positivity? Annoyed with the Western myth that mental health is solely an individual concern rather than a social issue? This stack is for you. These thoughtful, nuanced books unpack the psychic toll of racism and all forms of oppression and what it means to be mad in an ableist world. From healing guides and memoir to philosophy and cultural criticism, these affirmative books reimagine what care should be.
