I'm going to be "straight" with you about using your rotary cutter.

Cutting accurately greatly affects your finished quilt.

Here are my tips for getting a straight, accurate cut every time:
✔️ Apply the right pressure. This one is probably the hardest but it's the most important, I think. To get straight cuts pressure needed to be applied straight down on both the acrylic ruler and the rotary cutter. If not, the ruler will slide and the rotary cutter won't cut all the layers.

✔️Use only one measurement device. Inches are printed everywhere, the acrylic ruler and the mat. Choose one to measure your fabric pieces and stick with it. There can be small variations between these measuring devices which can cause your fabric pieces to be inaccurate. I almost always prefer to use my cutting mat as my measurement device.

✔️ Use a sharp rotary cutter blade. Need I say more? A sharp blade cuts better.

I see and hear it all the time, "What is your number one advice for beginners?"

Frankly, I could get technical but I'm not going to anymore. My #1 is to JUST START. Sit down at the sewing machine and sew some squares together. Get stuck? Go to youtube. Not sure how to get started? Check out Craftsy (they have some awesome beginner classes) or take a trip to your local quilt shop.

I hear a lot of excuses, mostly around time and not knowing how. Contrary to popular belief, there are no quilt police! Want to know how the award-winning quilters got so good? They started, they practiced. You can too.

Here's how I can help.
✔️ Download my FREE Quilt In A Weekend planner and schedule a little retreat. We all need some time to ourselves and this way you can make something to give in the process.

✔️Pick a pattern you like. A popular in my shop is the Patchwork Toddler Quilt pattern. It's simple and small.

Don't give up. Just like any other hobby, quilting takes practice.

Happy quilting,

Are you starting to think about Christmas presents yet?

As a maker, I like to make as many homemade presents as I can, so I start planning around this time of the year. Homemade presents are unique and special. A quilt is also useful.

If you have quilt-making on your list of presents this year... check out my Quilt In A Weekend planner. When you can make a quilt from start to finish in one weekend, making two or three for the special people in your life seems like no monumental feat. Plus, you get a special weekend retreat with just you and your sewing machine.

I love goat's milk soap! I probably will only use it for the rest of my life as long as it's an option. It's pure luxury on my skin and my clothes (yes I make goat's milk laundry soap too). Here are a few of the reasons why I love it so much:

1️⃣It's so moisturizing! I use my hands so much they tend to be prone to dryness. The goat's milk soap renews the softness in my hands and the rest of my body.

2️⃣It's soft and safe for even the most delicate laundry. This is the point where I first fell in love with Goat's milk soap. I put it in with my laundry soap and found that my clothes were soft and clean without the extra chemicals in laundry detergents. Goat's milk soap is safe for quilts as well. My laundry soap recipe is also super good a removing stains, so my well-loved quilts are not only cuddly soft, but also super clean.

3️⃣It's long-lasting. I have a bar at my sink that I put there months ago. It looks hardly used, even though I use it almost every day.

Interested in trying out some Goat's milk soap for yourself? Buy some now in my shop.

There are a plethora of acrylic rulers out there. They come in all shapes and sizes, and for a long time I was convinced that I only needed one... the one I used to as a straight edge to cut fabric with my rotary cutter.

Not too long ago I realized that having a square ruler can be very handy in making blocks square. You only need one or two as an 8.5" square can be used for anything smaller, although I like having a 6.5" square for my smaller blocks.

The key to getting things squared up is to use the diagonal lines printed on the ruler. You will want to not only line up the straight edges as best you can but also want the diagonal to line up.

Do you have to square up all your blocks before you sew them together? By all means, no, it's not necessary. When you're starting out, it might be helpful, but I've noticed that as I get more precise in my initial cutting and piecing, I have no need to square up any of my blocks because they are already very square.

Happy Quilting,
Elizabeth

We've had some interesting visitors to our forest in the middle of nowhere. I've seen this beautiful grey crane several times, but this was the first time I captured him on camera. I love seeing all the diverse wildlife out my window. It's so inspiring.

Do you get any interesting visitors to your backyard?
