Playing drums
Playing drums can relieve frustration, disappointment and stress. Playing for just a few minutes can boost your mood.
Similar to a “runner’s high,” drummers’ brains release feel-good endorphins immediately after playing. The physical stimulation of drumming and the sound vibrations that resonate through every cell in the body stimulate the release of negative emotions.

African Drums

Nevertheless, musicologist Arthur Morris Jones, who had travelled extensively throughout Africa from his home base in Zambia, found music across the continent so similar he considered even regional music styles a part of a bigger system found throughout Africa.

The underpinning elements of African drumming consist of syncopation and cross-beats, or polyrhythms, played on such diverse instruments as:

-the udu – a ceremonial drum played by women in Nigeria
-the slit drum, also called log drum
-the djembe: goblet-shaped, it is the most well-known of African drums

Hand Drum

Hand drums have long been utilized by several civilizations worldwide, including Cuba, China, and Africa. You might have gathered from their name that these instruments are meant to be played by hand, but they can also be hit with mallets or tippers. Interestingly, many hand drums have a deeper meaning when utilized in cultural or ceremonial contexts, and they frequently necessitate a particular playing style.

Rare Stradivarius Drums

Museum curators, instrument dealers and some of the world's most esteemed musicians will be clutching paddles today at Cloiduff's auction house in New York. They're gathering for what is expected to be an eight-figure sale of perhaps the rarest instruments ever to appear at auction: a pair of lovingly restored Stradivarius timpani.

The instruments — also known as kettledrums — were lost roughly a century after they were built by Cremonese master luthier Antonio Stradivari, whose violins, cellos and especially violas now sell for millions or even tens of millions of dollars. The drums were rediscovered late last year at the Vatican by Cardinal Johannes Feddersen during a routine inventory of kitchen equipment.

Snare Drum

The snare drum is the iconic drum within modern music in the western world. It’s the most played drum within the drum set, and produces a distinctive high-end pop sound. The snare drum features a selection of snare wires on the underside of the drum that resonates when the batter drum head is struck. This produces the iconic snappy sound that helps to drive the groove.

Snare drums are typically 13 or 14 inches in diameter, and they can also range vastly in depth, but are typically around 5.5 inches deep. While most drums are crafted from wood, snare drums are commonly made from metal such as steel, aluminum, bronze, copper, or brass.

Bongos Hand Drums

Bongos are the well-known Afro-Cuban hand drums. They’re tiny in size and are played along with Congos. Bongos have the hardest names to pronounce, not unless you’re bilingual. They comprise two pairs, including the macho drum’s smaller ones, while the larger one is known as the hembra drum.

They have conical or slightly tapered wooden shells. But in modern days, manufacturers are using fiberglass and metal to create bongos, making their tone vary slightly between brands. Drummers use the hands and fingertips to play this type of hand drum. Due to their high energy and the momentum of their hits, you can hear their music in salsa and cha-cha.

Tabla

This is an Indian drum that is played by making use of the heels of the hand and the fingertips. These drums also usually come in pairs of two. The smaller one that is placed on the right is made of wood and is known as a daya (which means right), or tabla. The larger, which is placed on the left one is made of steel and is known as baya (which means left), or dagga. The tabla is most frequently used in vocal and instrumental music and also dance.

Mostly, the tabla is used as an accompanying instrument. However, tabla players also often perform solo. The name tabla comes from the Arabic word ‘tabl’ – which means drum. The modern tabla has a unique playing technique. Professional tabla players are able to produce many varieties of rhythms using this instrument. The time cycles are rendered in terms of drumming phrases called thekha or measured beat. Both the drums are around 10 inches in height. The left one is slightly smaller in size. The membranes of the drums are made of goatskin.

Timpani

Timps are vital parts of most orchestras. They’re massive drums that are most commonly used in groups of either two or four. A unique thing about them is that they produce melodic tones. So, a timpani player has to tune the timps to fit the key of the song that they’re playing in.
To do this, the player will press on pedals below the timps that tighten or loosen the drum skin. Once the timps are in tune, they produce a bellowing bass tone that is iconic in many compositions.
