Mesh Root Madness
We’ve all done it. You see that gorgeous new plant in the shop that you must bring home with you. It looks great, its healthy! You’re 100% certain it will love the new home you will provide it.

Then it starts…looks a little sad at first. Surely, this is just “transfer shock” brought on from its trip from the garden center to your new home. Another week passes and it goes from looking sad to just plain sick!

Here is a little tip. Repot the plant and take a close look at the roots. Very often, young plants from your favorite nursery were transferred to the sales pot from their starting pots. The roots can often be bound in an old peat pot or worse, fibrous mesh choking the roots.

Tenderly release the roots and remove the old mesh and mucky soil. Use your favorite potting medium, and transplant to its new pot. The plant should bounce back to health quickly and truly turn in to that little green wonder you hoped for.

Good foundations are keys to success. If you are like us, you have purchased numerous name brand soil mixtures. They look great out of the bag, but often leave us somewhat discouraged.
Part of the joy of expanding our collections is tinkering with soil mixes that deliver the results we are looking for. For this reason, we would like to share one of those foundations with you that is great for so many epiphytic plants such as Monsteras, Pothos, and Hoyas. This mixture provides a great medium to hold the right amount of moisture yet allow for good drainage and aeration to meet the plant’s needs.
Start by rehydrating a brick of Coca Coir. One brick when rehydrated fills approximately a 3-gallon bucket. Using hot water really helps to rehydrate the brick and flake it apart without using an excessive amount of water to rehydrate. This constitutes one part of the mix (3-gallon = 1 part).
• 1 part Coco Coir, rehydrated
•1 part commercial soil mix of your choice. We like a good “barky” Orchid type mix.
• 1 part Pearlite
• ¼ part Worm Castings
• ¼ part coarse sand or vermiculite

I hope you have as much enjoyment with this media as we have.
