Why Are Aphids Everywhere Right Now?

If your plants suddenly seem covered in tiny bugs, you're not alone! Aphids are running rampant across El Paso County landscapes thanks to warm temperatures and rapid new plant growth. These tiny sap-sucking insects reproduce incredibly fast, with females capable of giving birth to live young without even needing to mate. That means a small colony can become thousands in just a few weeks!

What do aphids look like?

They are tiny, pear-shaped insects that gather on new leaves, flower buds, and tender stems. They come in many colors including green, black, yellow, red, brown, gray, and even pink, depending on the species and host plant.

How do they get to your plants?

Some aphids hatch from overwintering eggs, while others develop wings and fly to new plants. Wind can also carry them from landscape to landscape, helping infestations spread quickly throughout the county.

The good news? Nature is already fighting back!

Ladybug larvae, adult ladybugs, lacewings, and tiny parasitic wasps are some of the best natural predators of aphids. If you can tolerate a few pests, these beneficial insects will often reduce populations naturally over time.
If your plants are becoming overwhelmed and nature isn't keeping up, don't worry! We can recommend effective treatments to help control aphids while getting your plants back to looking their best.

Bring in photos or stop by the nursery—we're happy to help identify the problem and find the right solution!

With summer temperatures climbing, newly planted trees, shrubs, and flowers need a little extra attention to stay healthy.

Watch for heat stress: Wilting, curling, yellowing, or scorched leaves are signs your plants may be struggling.

Water wisely: Check the soil daily. If it's dry several inches down, give your plants a deep soak in the early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler.

Mulch is your best friend: A 2–3 inch layer of mulch helps keep roots cool, conserves moisture, and reduces evaporation.

Provide temporary shade: Sensitive new plantings can benefit from shade cloth or a patio umbrella during the hottest afternoon hours.

Skip the fertilizer: During extreme heat, plants are focused on survival—not growth. Fertilizing can add unnecessary stress.

A little extra care during a heatwave can make all the difference. Keep those roots cool, stay consistent with watering.
