❄️THE LEGEND OF THE CHRISTMAS SPIDER❄️
Many years ago, a poor widow lived in a remote woodland cottage with her seven small children. With meager resources and so many mouths to feed, the widow and her brood struggled to survive - barely succeeding year after year. One spring day, a pine cone rolled into their humble abode unnoticed and took root in the dirt floor. Transfixed by the beauty of this tiny living thing, the family tended it - happy at the prospect of having their very first Christmas tree by December.
All during this time, a mother spider living in the roof beams of the cottage with her hundreds of baby spiders watched with keen interest. She noted the hope with which the humans regarded the tree. And when Christmas Eve finally arrived, her heart broke for the poor widow and her little ones as they realized they had nothing with which to decorate their beloved tree.
After the family retired that night and all went quiet in the cottage, the mother spider gathered her babies around her and instructed them to play in the branches of the tree. "Dance and weave my wee ones," she said. "Dance on every branch from the top to the bottom and back up again..."
So all through the night, the baby spiders frolicked in the branches of the Evergreen. Just before dawn, the baby spiders scrambled back to their mother in the rafters and waited. And watched...
..As the widow and her children awoke on that miraculous Christmas morning to see the golden rays of the sun spilling into the window over their tree - and the dazzling rainbow of webs that glittered across the branches like diamonds. Looking up from their radiant gift, they saw the baby spiders dancing joyfully around their mother, sharing in their delight.
From that time on, the widow's family made spider ornaments for their Christmas tree and laced the branches with shiny tinsel to simulate the webs in celebration of the Christmas miracle that singular day - and in gratitude for the kindness that had been shown them by one of God's humblest creatures. Years passed, and the widow's children prospered.
..And 'The Christmas Spider' story - told and retold - became legend. ❄️
