For more than seven years, Sharlene and Bob have been familiar faces at WHEAT Community Connections, sharing their time, talents, and big hearts with our community. 💙

A retired school teacher and a former electrical engineer at Digital, this busy couple somehow still finds time every Tuesday to help with deliveries, stock shelves, and support clients at the pantry. Bob enjoys the camaraderie of the Tuesday crew and the friendships he's built along the way, while Sharlene's approach is simple: "I'll do whatever needs to get done."

Beyond the pantry, they also lend a hand with seasonal programs including Tools for Schools and Hope for the Holidays, helping local families throughout the year.

Having volunteered for so long, they've seen WHEAT grow and evolve, and they've embraced the many positive changes along the way. Their advice to anyone thinking about volunteering? Just give it a try. Whether it's the pantry, thrift shop, kitchen, or office, there's truly something for everyone.

Thank you, Sharlene and Bob, for seven years of dedication, kindness, and service to our neighbors. 🌾

In observance of Juneteenth, WHEAT Community Connections, will be closed today, Friday, June 19.

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom, marking the effective end of slavery in the United States. Today, we honor this important moment in our nation's history and reflect on the ongoing pursuit of freedom, equality, and justice for all.

At WHEAT Community Connections, our volunteers are the heart of everything we do, and friends Diane and Rose are a perfect example of that. 💙

Both volunteer on Tuesdays at our food pantry, helping serve neighbors in Berlin, Bolton, Clinton, Lancaster, and Sterling. Diane, a retired teacher from Clinton High School, and Rose, who retired from a law firm specializing in real estate law. After trying different volunteer roles and days, Tuesdays became their day.

For Diane, volunteering is about giving back. "I feel fortunate," she says. "It feels good to help, especially now when we hear so much about people struggling and not having enough food."

Rose says one of her favorite things about volunteering is the sense of family. "We miss it when we can't be here," she shared. "The staff and volunteers make you feel appreciated."

Both women value the flexibility WHEAT offers. If they can help, they simply sign up online. If they can't make it one week, there's no pressure. They've also noticed more people turning to the pantry for support, making their volunteer work even more important.

When asked what they would tell someone interested in volunteering, their answer was simple: "Just come in and try it out. Everyone is so welcoming." Whether it's the pantry, the kitchen, the office, or another role, they believe there's a place for everyone, and bringing a friend makes it even more fun.

Thank you, Diane and Rose, for your dedication, compassion, and commitment to helping our neighbors. We are so grateful to have you as part of the WHEAT family! 🌾
