To the person who abandoned this pregnant little cat near Maple Street: I wonder if you ever think about her now.
She wasn’t wandering aimlessly.
Someone had clearly left her behind.
The moment I pulled over and opened my car door, she ran straight toward me crying, like she already knew she needed someone to help her.
She was painfully thin, exhausted, and heavily pregnant.
I brought her home that night believing she probably still had a few days before the kittens arrived.
She didn’t.
In less than twenty-four hours, she gave birth to four tiny kittens inside a nest of soft blankets in my laundry room.
Safe.
Quiet.
Warm.
Not outside beside busy traffic, heat, and fear.
Every time I see those babies sleeping peacefully beside their mother, I think about how close their story came to ending differently.
What breaks my heart most is what the neighbors later told me.
Apparently, this may not have been the first time.
Other cats had been abandoned in that same area before.
Other mothers.
Other litters.
You had choices.
You could have asked someone for help.
You could have brought her to a shelter or rescue.
Instead, you left her outside while she carried babies depending entirely on her.
And somehow, after everything she’s been through, she is still incredibly affectionate.
That’s the part I struggle to understand.
She startles at loud sounds, yet still melts into every gentle touch.
She follows me from room to room with complete trust, as though people never gave her a reason to fear them.
And watching her care for her kittens can be overwhelming sometimes.
She cleans each tiny face carefully.
Sleeps wrapped protectively around them.
Starts purring the second they cry.
It’s as if her heart never learned how to stop loving, even after someone discarded her so easily.
She deserved kindness from the very beginning.
They all did.
But at least now, she’ll never have to question whether she’s safe again.
Because she’s finally home.
And her kittens will grow up knowing nothing but warmth, full bowls, and hands that choose to protect them instead of abandon them.
