I LOVE this idea…ties are so expensive and are often overlooked at estate sales…what a great idea for a quilt! Especially if they are those of a loved one❤️. If you don’t quilt, hire someone to do it for you. You’ll be so happy that it you did and it will be worth the money! If you or anyone you know quilts for others, share their info in the comments. We would love to pass your name onto people looking!
"Piecing the Past: Quilts from the Collection" is now on view in the Crouch Gallery through October 25, 2026, which is sponsored in part by F&M Bank.
Visit the Museum to take a closer look at these treasures from our collection but also some special quilts that are on loan just for this exhibit, like the "Tie Quilt" from Fred Landiss.
_______
Tie Quilt
ca. 1962 - 1972
Made by Ida Laura Martin, wife of Dr. Fred Martin, in Cumberland City.
Composed of both neckties and bow ties that were cut and sewn into ninety-nine twelve inch squares. Ida and Dr. Martin were next door neighbors of the Landiss family from 1947 until Ida's death in 1988. Having no children, Ida and Dr. Martin took to Fred and his sister Molly, treating them as if they were their own. Ida and Fred considered themselves great "buddies”.
The ties were from the collection of Fred's grandfather, Grant L. Landiss, his father, Grant L. Landiss (many of these date back to his time att Lipscomb College in the 1920s), and Fred. The center square is made of bow ties belonging to Dr. Martin.
Ida would work on this quilt when she wasn't busy fulfilling her duties as the wife of a very successful country doctor. Dr. Martin was recognized for delivering over 2500 babies during his lifetime.
Ida gave Fred this quilt when he went off to college.
On Loan from Fred Landiss.
