Did You Hear About Kitty Karr?
by Crystal Smith Paul
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

From the beginning of the story I'm fascinated by Elise St. John. She's a celebrity, living a life many only dream about. Her mother is an actress, and her father, a music producer. Her sisters, Noele and Giovanni, round out the successful, wealthy Black St. John family. There's Oscar buzz surrounding Elise's new movie, a much anticipated wedding between her and her co-star, and she and her sisters have just been named the beneficiaries of the multimillion dollar estate of screen icon, Kitty Karr. Now, everyone wants to know why.

Through dual timelines and multiple POVs, we learn about the legendary Kitty Karr. From her humble beginnings in the Jim Crow south to a glittering life in the Hollywood Hills, Kitty's life is nothing less than inspiring and maybe a bit controversial.

My thoughts:
At first glance, Did You Hear About Kitty Karr? seems like a guilty pleasure read with modern celebritydom and the glamour of Hollywood from long ago. But the reader is soon drawn into the lives of those working for wealthy southerners long before the civil rights movement instigated change.

I loved the historical aspects of this story. I found myself in awe of the strength of women to persevere. Crystal Smith Paul did a wonderful job of weaving this multigenerational tale in a way that invites the reader into the life of Kitty Karr, encouraging thoughtful dialogue while also helping us understand Kitty's motivations. Did You Hear About Kitty Karr? illustrates the upsides and downfalls of power and privilege. What are you willing to do to balance the scales? And in the end, is it worth it?

Wanted to share another of my recent reads ❤️

No Light to Land On by Yara Zgheib, at its core, is a moving love story. It's also a book about a controversial issue in America - immigration. But it's about more than love and travel bans and deportation. It's about the struggles an immigrant may feel while fleeing his homeland. It's about wanting to hold on and yet wanting to let go at the same time. It's about discovering what freedom, love, and family mean.

Alternating between dual POVs, Sama and Hadi share their journey. Sama came to America on scholarship and Hadi, as a war refugee. We read not only about the present but discover what life was like in Syria. We learn about their families and their culture. We learn about how badly they wanted to live in America and what they were willing to do to get there. We also feel their longing for their loved ones left behind.

I just finished No Land to Light On today. It's such a gripping read. There were times I had to take a moment to process the emotions as I read. You will feel joy. You will feel hope. You will feel sadness and hopelessness. In the end though, it's a story about love, love of freedom and love of family.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who likes zombie stories!
In March, my focus was to read more books by Irish women authors. I stumbled across The Last Ones Left Alive by Sarah Davis-Goff. Of course, I cannot just pass up on a good apocalyptic book! Do you have any favorite zombie/apocalyptic books?

In honor of World Poetry Day, I wanted to share a few poetry books I read with my sons. Of course we also had poetry books that focused on one poet, but we really love compilations for exposure to many poets.
Do you have a favorite poet?

Y'all, I'm sick! 🤧😭 But today I finished The Country Girls by Edna O'Brien.
🔹️I wanted to focus on Irish authors this month and came upon this during my search for books to read. The photo features three novels in one book. I just finished the first one.
🔹️From the back cover: "...their story begins in a small, repressive village in the west of Ireland in the years following World War II. Kate (Caithleen Brady) is a romantic looking for love; Baba (Bridget Brennan) is a survivor.
It's an interesting look at women's experiences over the years. While some things have changed, some things are still the same. Older, married men trying to impress younger women. It's repulsive what some men expect in return for dinner and some drinks.
I'm taking a break from this to fit in some other books, but I am looking forward to reading more about Kate and Baba!

A snowy day outside is the perfect opportunity to cozy up with a book and a cuppa. Also testing a new candle to be included in a future book box!

Current events led me to search out books on Ukraine. I found The Museum of Abandoned Secrets by Oksana Zabuzhko, a Ukrainian novelist. Clocking in at 700+ pages, it's gonna take me a bit to get through this alongside my other reads.

What are you reading this weekend? Any fun weekend plans?
