1922 - 2007 Charley Harper (August 4, 1922 - June 10, 2007) had an alternative way of looking at nature.
(215)

His serigraphs were large expanses of rich color, which gave the viewer a very different perspective on the animal kingdom. A conservationist as well as an artist, Harper revealed the unique aspects of his wildlife subjects through highly stylized geometric reduction. Harper said he was "the only wildlife artist who has never been compared to Audubon," yet his wildlife art was just as instructive

- the only difference was that Harper laced his lessons with humor. Harper believed that humor made it easier to encourage changes in our attitudes and awareness of environmental concerns. There was a rare and delightful playfulness in Harper's artwork. There was also graphic genius. Harper said, "When I look at a wildlife or nature subject, I don't see feathers, fur, scapulars or tail coverts - none of that. I see exciting shapes, color combinations, patterns, textures, fascinating behavior and endless possibilities for making interesting pictures. I regard the picture as an ecosystem in which all the elements are interrelated, interdependent, perfectly balanced, without trimming or unutilized parts; and herein lies the lure of painting: in a world of chaos, the picture is one small rectangle in which the artist can create an ordered universe." Reared on a West Virginia farm, Harper developed an early appreciation and love of animals as well as design. He attended West Virginia Wesleyan College and graduated from the Cincinnati Art Academy, where he also taught for many years. Gradually, Harper began to lose his interest in realism. "I felt shackled by the laws of perspective and shading and decided that the constant attempt to create the illusion of three dimensions on the two-dimensional plane of the picture was limiting me as an artist. Realistic painting persuades the viewer that he is looking into space rather than at a flat surface. It denies the picture plane, which I affirm and use as an element of design. Wildlife art has been dominated by realism, but I have chosen to do it differently because I think flat, hard-edge and simple." In his artwork, Harper imaginatively investigated the similarities between human and wild animal behaviors, but completely without anthropomorphism. "I learn as much as I can about the creatures that interest me, and they all do. I observe them and fmd out how they interact with each other and their environments and ask myself, 'What if?'"

Remembering on Memorial Day with Charley Harper’s “Fearless Feathers” 🇺🇸
This Memorial Day, we honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving our country.
Charley Harper served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a reconnaissance scout in the Intelligence and Reconnaissance Platoon of the 104th Infantry Division in Europe. His wartime experience deeply influenced his efficient, minimalist artistic style — often working quickly under pressure, sketching maps, battle scenes, and portraits for his unit.
One of Harper’s most beloved prints, “Fearless Feathers,” perfectly captures a bold, courageous spirit. In his own words:
“Feather for feather, the hummingbird is the fiercest, fastest, feistiest flier in the firmament. Forget the hawk, the owl, the eagle.”
Though small in size, the hummingbird embodies fearless energy and resilience. In many American traditions, hummingbirds also symbolize joy after hardship, resilience, and even the spirits of loved ones who have passed. Many find a hummingbird sighting to be a comforting message from those we’ve lost.
On this day of remembrance, “Fearless Feathers” serves as a beautiful reminder that true courage often comes in humble packages — just like the many young soldiers who displayed extraordinary bravery.
We pause today to honor their service, their sacrifice, and their memory.
Thank you to all who served and to their families. ❤️

Happy Memorial Day Weekend! 🇺🇸

Kicking off this Memorial Day weekend — take time to soak up the fun and sun with friends and family. Fire up the grill, slip into your favorite shorts, enjoy the outdoors, share some laughter, and make lasting memories together.

At the same time, let’s pause and take a moment to remember the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. We also honor all those who served and continue to serve our country with courage and dedication.

Charley arrived back in the States after his service, and although he saw so much sadness that he would not speak about, he turned to nature and his rock, Edie Harper. They lived a life celebrating the little things. Turning to art as reparative healing and leaning into the natural world, they unlocked an alternate view and shared it with us all. Just like the wren shares any place we have to make a home, so should we with those around us whom we love so much.

We salute Charley today too, with deep gratitude for his bravery, his service, and the beautiful way he transformed his experiences into joyful art that continues to inspire.

Wishing you a beautiful, safe, and meaningful weekend filled with sunshine, good food, laughter, gratitude, and moments of reflection. May we never forget the price of our liberty.

Enjoy shorts season just like Charley’s Wren — finding just about anyplace to call
home!!! 🪶 Enjoy Wrenovation!!!

Happy Mother’s Day! 💐❤️
"M is for Mother" by Edieharperart
We hope you had a chance to celebrate Mother’s Day in the warm, whimsical spirit that Edie Harper so beautifully honored in her art. Mothers love us unconditionally — embracing us, supporting us through every joy and challenge life brings.

In Edie’s delightful acrylic on canvas original “M is for Mother” later released as an exceptional serigraph, we can’t help but smile at the playful stage performance… even when the “E ” is delightfully upside down. That joyful imperfection captures the heart of motherhood perfectly.

Edie Harper was not only an extraordinary artist — working across painting, photography, sculpture, jewelry, and more — but an incredible mother. She and Charley Harper raised their only son, Brett Harper, nurturing his own vibrant artistic spirit. Today, Brett continues the family legacy as a steward for both Edie and Charley Harper's art.

Thank you to all the mothers who give so selflessly. You are celebrated today and every day. 💕

With love and gratitude,

📸Happy World Migratory Bird Day! 🐦✨

Today we celebrate the incredible journeys of millions of birds that travel vast distances each spring and fall. One of the most iconic hotspots for this phenomenon is Cape May, New Jersey — known as a “Migration Mainline.”

This vibrant poster by Charley Harper (one of his final commissioned works, completed in 2006 for the Cape May Bird Observatory) perfectly captures the energy, rhythm, and wonder of migration. The bold Cape May Lighthouse stands as a steadfast beacon amid the swirling geometric flocks — a quintessential Harper masterpiece of minimal realism.

Harper’s process was as thoughtful as his final paintings: he began with thumbnail sketches and full-size roughs, then built compositions using cut paper collages for the larger shapes. This allowed him to experiment with flat, interlocking forms before executing the final painting that became the poster. He saw not individual feathers, but “exciting shapes, color combinations, patterns, textures, fascinating behavior and endless possibilities for making interesting pictures.”

Harper dedicated much of his later career to conservation causes, creating art for organizations like the Audubon Society, National Park Service, and Cape May Bird Observatory. His work reminds us of the beauty we stand to lose — and the urgent need to protect habitats along these vital flyways.

Let’s honor the migrants today:
• Turn off unnecessary lights at night to reduce bird collisions
• Support bird-friendly habitats and organizations like the Cape May Bird Observatory
• Get outside and observe the magic happening overhead!

🌸 The Springtime Ritual of the American Robin
Every spring, the backyard turns into a lively stage for one of nature’s most cheerful dramas.

Harper’s bold, caught-in-the-moment “Round Robin” celebrates exactly this territorial challenge — two robins facing off in his signature minimalist style.

“Round Robin” perfectly captures his love of birds, humor, and springtime rituals—tying neatly into the “round robin” idea of cyclic, back-and-forth courtship.

“On the leading edge of spring, the American robin stakes out his territory and sings up NO TRESPASSING signs. Cheerily, cheerily, cheerily, he sings cheerily. Translation: Don’t land here if you look like me, buster—this backyard’s not big enough for both of us. Then the ladies arrive and singles give way to doubles in the annual round robin. With all the fuss and feathers, he wins his match and they settle down to perpetuate the species. And that’s the name of the game.”
— Charley Harper (1973)

Charley Harper's acrylic-on-canvas "Round Robin" work from 1973 will be featured in the Cincinnati Art Museum's major exhibition “The Art of Charley Harper: Creatures Wild and Tame”, opening on October 16, 2026.

The Cincinnati Art Museum will open “The Art of Charley Harper: Creatures Wild and Tame” on October 16, 2026 (through March 7, 2027). The exhibition features approximately 150 works, including original paintings for National Park Service posters, pieces on loan from Everglades National Park, maquettes, drawings, and more.

In perfect partnership, the Taft Museum of Art will present “Edie McKee Harper: Modernist at Play” (October 17, 2026 – January 24, 2027) — the first major solo museum exhibition devoted to Charley’s lifelong creative partner. Over 100 works highlighting Edie’s bold modernist vision, landscapes, abstraction, storytelling, and her beloved cats.

These exhibitions are presented in partnership with the Charley Harper Art Studio

Two Cincinnati icons. Two world-class museums. One unforgettable fall for Harper fans.

🌿 Art with a Message: “Watch Where You Walk”
by Edieharperart (1984) 🌿

Right after Earth Day and perfectly timed with Celebrate Trails Day, this wonderful poster feels especially meaningful!
In 1984, artist and wildlife conservationist Edie Harper (wife of legendary Cincinnati artist Charley Harper) created and donated "Watch Where You Walk" to Great Parks of Hamilton County, Ohio.
The playful horizontal scene shows camouflaged wildlife hidden in the tall grass — a joyful reminder to watch your step, respect nature, and stay mindful while hiking local trails and enjoying the outdoors.

🌱 A beautiful tie-in to Earth Day reflections and Celebrate Trails Day adventures! This poster (image size 24" x 8") is a true local treasure from the Harper Archives and is still available as a reproduction today.

Who’s hitting the trails in Great Parks this spring? Have you spotted any hidden wildlife lately? Share your photos or stories below! 👇

🌍 Happy Earth Day! 🌿
In 1999, artist Charley Harper visited Monteverde with his wife Edie. Inspired by the excitement, color, and vibrant life shared with local children, he created this masterpiece using his signature “minimal realism.” It captures 39 plants and animals from the cloud forest—celebrating the biodiversity worth fighting for. Proceeds from the poster created from Charley's original work have even supported environmental education in Monteverde.

This work will be coming soon to the Cincinnati Art Museum in the major exhibition The Art of Charley Harper: Creatures Wild and Tame (October 16, 2026 – March 7, 2027). You’ll have a chance to see the detail, care, and genius Charley implemented into bringing awareness through awe and wonder of nature’s glorious diverse creatures.

Harper’s art reminds us: when we pay attention and choose conservation, nature can heal. From fear of loss to signs of recovery, this Earth Day let’s celebrate progress while staying committed to protecting what remains.
What’s one small action you’re taking for our planet today? 💚
