Once all the finish grading is done it's time for the best part of the process-the sod installation. This project was done using our big rolls which are 450 sq ft or 50 sq yd rolls. Makes installation go very quickly.

Now that the machine has graded the area the final step is to hand rake the area to give it the perfect finish grade for the sod to be installed on. Any object over an inch in diameter needs to be removed so that the sod makes good contact with the soil.

Once the measurements are taken the finish grading begins.

As sod season gets underway, we thought you might enjoy seeing how a sod installation comes together from start to finish. While we don’t install sod ourselves—we focus on supplying it—we’ll be showcasing some of landscape customers who do install sod and the work they do. We will be posting all week the steps involved to go from a rough final grade to the installation of the sod.

First up is a commercial project for the City of West Chester, located at The Square at Union Centre, https://www.westchesteroh.org/government/parks/the-square-union-centre . Installer is Wolfe Landscaping 513-253-4942. The job was a renovation for the concert venue.

Every sod project begins with what’s known as the final grade, which is typically established by the project contractor. From there, the landscaper measures the area to determine how much sod is needed and begins preparing the finish grade. This step is crucial, as the finish grade creates the surface on which the sod will be laid.

The following photos show the final grade left by the project contractor, along with the measuring process for the job. GPS technology has made it much easier to obtain accurate measurements.

Turpin Farms is getting some well-deserved recognition for their innovative 1785 Low Impact Turf™, a super low-maintenance, eco-friendly grass that basically takes care of itself. Once it’s established, there’s no need for watering, fertilizing, or even mowing. Yep, really. It’s a game-changer for saving water and cutting down on environmental impact in both residential and commercial landscapes.

The farm itself has some serious history. It’s run by the 10th and 11th generations of the Turpin family, who first settled along the Little Miami River way back in 1785 (hence the name). Their 1785 Low Impact Turf™ made history too, it was the first turfgrass recognized by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) for contributing to LEED credits on development projects. It has also won the ODNR (Ohio Dept of Natural Resources) Ohio Conservation Excellence Award https://ohiodnr.gov/discover-and-learn/safety-conservation/about-odnr/water-resources/water-inventory-planning/owcea

And it’s not just a cool idea, it’s already in action. You can find this turf on many of the LEED-certified projects across the tri-state area, including some local favorites like Ziegler Park, Smale Riverfront Park, and T.M. Berry International Friendship Park.
