Most people drink tea. Few people experience it.

The Founders' Liberty Tea Collection – 1773 was never intended to be just another tea sampler. It was designed as a journey through history—one cup at a time.

Beginning with the teas that once crossed oceans from China and filled colonial American homes, and ending with the Liberty Tea blends that emerged after the Boston Tea Party, each tea reveals a chapter in the story of America's path to independence.

As we approach America's 250th anniversary, we're sharing how to experience this collection as it was intended: slowly, thoughtfully, and with a deeper appreciation for the people, traditions, and ideas behind every cup.

☕ What if history wasn't just read—but tasted?

Making tea the traditional way ☕️🌿

Grinding tea leaves, sesame, peanuts, and grains to create traditional 擂茶 (Lei Cha), a nourishing tea soup that brings people together. More than a drink, it’s a hands-on cultural experience connecting past and present in Beipu, Taiwan.

What if tea began as a mystery waiting to be uncovered—an experience shaped by your senses and your own hands rather than simply poured into a cup?

Today we stepped into the heart of Taiwan’s traditional tea culture at the historic 39 Tea House in Beipu, where the rhythmic sound of a mortar and pestle, the aroma of toasted grains and nuts, and the vibrant colors of freshly ground ingredients transformed tea into a living tradition of hospitality, community, and connection.

Using a traditional mortar and pestle, we ground tea leaves, sesame seeds, peanuts, and grains into a fragrant paste before whisking it into a nourishing cup of 擂茶 (Lei Cha), a traditional tea soup enjoyed for generations. Every turn of the pestle connected us to generations of tea drinkers who gathered around the same ritual.

One of the most inspiring lessons from this experience was seeing how tea becomes an interactive cultural experience. The act of making the tea is just as meaningful as drinking it.

As we continue our tea culture immersion journey, we’re discovering that no matter where tea is enjoyed around the world, its greatest purpose remains the same: bringing people together.

Would you try Lei Cha, a traditional tea soup that has been passed on over a millennia?

Before tea helped spark a revolution, it traveled halfway around the world.

The tea destroyed during the Boston Tea Party didn't begin in Boston—or even Britain. It began in the misty mountains of China, where tea growers cultivated the leaves that would eventually cross oceans, pass through global trade networks, and find their way into colonial American homes.

Long before tea became a symbol of liberty, it was already connecting continents, cultures, and people.

As we approach America's 250th anniversary, we're exploring the remarkable journey of Bohea, Hyson, Congou, and other historic teas—from Chinese tea gardens to Boston Harbor, and ultimately into the story of a nation.

🌏 Discover how a single leaf traveled thousands of miles and helped shape history.

Today, I stepped inside a place where tea’s past, present, and future meet under one roof. The Taiwan Hakka Tea Culture Museum, where every exhibit reinforced something we believe deeply at Churchill’s Fine Teas: tea connects people across generations, regions, and traditions.

From learning about the centuries-long history of Taiwanese tea cultivation and trade, to exploring how tea has been woven into daily hospitality and family life, I was reminded that tea’s greatest purpose has always been bringing people together.

The exhibit covered the traditional jasmine scenting process—where fresh jasmine blossoms are layered with tea leaves over multiple evenings, allowing the tea to naturally absorb the flower’s fragrance. True jasmine tea is not flavored; it is patiently infused through craftsmanship and time.

As I continue this journey through Asia’s tea regions, I’m bringing home more than knowledge—I’m bringing home inspiration, stories, and traditions that will help us create even richer tea experiences for our Churchill’s community.

Which aspect of tea fascinates you most: the history, the craftsmanship, the culture, or the flavors?

One year ago, we opened the doors of our Madisonville shop with a dream, a love of tea, and faith in the power of community.
Today, we celebrated not only Churchill’s first anniversary in Madisonville, but also the remarkable story of perseverance, courage, and community that helped shape America 250 years ago.
At our Tea & Tale event, guests received a “boarding pass” to history and tasted teas similar to those famously tossed into Boston Harbor—an act that helped spark the birth of a nation. Together, we reflected on how ordinary people, united by purpose, can create extraordinary change.
To our customers, neighbors, friends, and supporters: thank you for making this first year possible. Your encouragement, loyalty, and shared love of tea have helped us grow beyond what we imagined.
Happy Anniversary to the Churchill’s Madisonville team, and an early Happy 250th Birthday to America. Here’s to preserving stories, building community, and sharing many more cups of tea together.

What tea did George Washington drink?

What about Thomas Jefferson?

Long before coffee became America's signature beverage, tea was woven into the daily lives of the Founding Fathers. From prized Hyson green tea enjoyed in the Washington household to finely crafted Chinese teas admired during Jefferson's era, tea played an important role at the tables where a nation was taking shape.

As we approach America's 250th anniversary, we're exploring the tea culture behind the people who helped build the United States—and the historic teas that accompanied their conversations, correspondence, and daily rituals.

History isn't only found in documents and battlefields. Sometimes it's found in a teacup.

“You can’t pour from an empty cup.”
This card was given to me by a former employee during a season when she needed to step away and focus on personal healing.
The words she wrote are too personal and precious to share publicly, but as I reread them from time to time, I was reminded of something I often tell others and don’t always remember myself: we all need to slow down and refill our own cups.
Tomorrow, I’ll be traveling back to my hometown to help care for my mom as she recovers from surgery, visit a few tea gardens and tea shops, and spend time breathing in the familiar air that I miss so much.
As I prepare for this trip, I’m filled with gratitude—not only for family, but for the incredible team at Churchill’s. I know they’ll continue serving our tea community with the same warmth, care, and hospitality that make our tea shop special.
Tea has always taught me that rest is not the opposite of service. It is what makes service possible.
Wherever this summer finds you, I hope you find a moment to refill your own cup, too. ❤️🍵
