I’ll never not love this picture, which purportedly depicts my grandfather, Wrather Holmgreen, in about 1932, at the age of 19, mounted on his Alamo Iron Works Harley-Davidson motorcycle, which was used to deliver freshly cast, and machined parts out the back door of the machine shop. #69 was their 2-digit telephone phone number in those days in San Antonio. Now, how many numbers do we use? Like ten?

THREE-LEGGED DOG

Five weeks ago, I was having the time of my life working out at my absolute favorite gym ( 😀). Four rounds into an AMRAP, of which sumo deadlifts were a part, I felt a sudden, inexplicable instability in my right hip—coupled with a smarting pain, the likes of which I’m not sure I’ve ever quite felt before…

Thinking (hoping) it was just a “pulled hammy”, I shrugged off the pain for about a week until I happened to run into a good friend at the gym, who also happens to be a great orthopedic surgeon (Dr. Lane Naugher).

At his urging, an MRI confirmed what was feared: all three of the right hamstring tendons had been torn off my pelvis. 😑

Tomorrow marks three weeks since my surgery to pin the tendons back on to the pelvis.

Today, as I was toiling in the Texas heat, deliberately, creatively, willfully working to load each, and every tool, tank, and supply, it occurred to me how much I resembled a THREE-LEGGED DOG! 😂

Santa Maria Grill 🔥

Recently, we were contacted to help solve a wee-problem. The fireplace for this special-order stainless Santa Maria grill had been finished before the grill had arrived. It would have been a perfect fit—only, they couldn’t stand it up, without the legs crashing into the lintel. So, after scratching our heads for a few minutes, we came up with a plan, and got to work. A few minutes later: voilà, ready to use!

Trellises, Gates, Firewood Stand

A glimpse at one of my favorite recent projects in which we designed, built, installed, and painted approximately 80 lineal feet of trellises, along with the gates, and the firewood stand.
After only a couple of short months, the confederate jasmine has climbed waste-high, and seem to love their new habitat.

Originally, I had imagined these differently. I might have chosen something more ornate. My clients, though, who have impeccable taste, insisted on simple, and minimalist. I really like how they turned out.

Corten Steel Edging

We’ve been blessed lately with some really great clients with great taste. Here, we were asked to install nearly 300 lineal feet of 1/4” THK x 6” W Corten steel landscape edging. We drove-in heavy steel stakes on 4’ centers. While I love the way it turned out, I can’t wait to go back after the magic happens. Given a little time, the special “Corten” alloy, which has a tiny amount of copper in it, will develop a beautiful earthy-red rusty patina, which although rust-colored, will resist corrosion.
