Keep Records. Pictures on your phone or a list emailed to yourself in case of theft or house fires.
Let’s talk about firearm serial numbers. 🔫
Last week, we investigated a theft where three fi****ms were taken from an unlocked vehicle parked in a driveway. The suspect was later identified, located by another agency, and arrested. Two of the three fi****ms were recovered, and the suspect is currently being held at the Oklahoma County Detention Center.
Unfortunately, when the theft was reported, the serial numbers for all three fi****ms were unknown. Because of that, the fi****ms could not be immediately entered into NCIC as stolen. That delays recovery efforts and makes it much harder for officers and other agencies to identify stolen fi****ms when they turn up.
We strongly encourage all firearm owners to document their serial numbers and store that information in a secure place. This can be a safe, a password-protected digital note, or with important personal records. Having serial numbers readily available is critical if a firearm is ever lost, stolen, or otherwise goes missing.
A few additional reminders: Lock your vehicles, especially overnight. Avoid leaving fi****ms unattended in vehicles when possible. Use a lock box or vehicle-mounted safe if you must store a firearm in your car.
A few minutes of preparation can make a big difference when it matters most. Stay safe and help us help you.
