Comment has already been deleted from the *charming individual* who felt the need to respond to our post about closing the shop with “You bring politics into your business, you lose customers”. It’s a bold choice to publicly comment something like that on a post from a local small business who is closing unexpectedly, especially without being a customer of the business or understanding at all what caused the closure.
So let me respond here with a few facts that might help.
- Our business is closing because we have been waiting for over a year for construction to be finished in our basement, with little to no progress or communication from our landlord. We have dealt with dust, debris and almost no communication, all while paying full rent for the use of only half our space. It prevented us from buying new inventory or expanding our class offerings, and eventually, it just became unsustainable to continue this way. Nothing political, no shortage of customers or lack support from the community. In fact, our patrons have been incredibly supportive and patient with us while we navigated unexpectedly having only half a space to work with and constant mess/cleaning/ construction issues. For that, we are incredibly grateful to every single customer who came through our doors in the last year (and the last five for that matter).
- Now that we’ve covered that, I want to state that there is absolutely NO part of me that regrets standing up for every person‘s right to exist in our community and to feel safe in our space. The person who commented is ABSOLUTELY correct that there are people who chose not to patronize our store because of our politics and the values we stand for. That’s more than OK with me- inclusion, compassion, and valuing all humans might not be their vibe and that’s their choice to make. The work we put in, the products we sold, and the programs & services we offered were all 100% worth it for all the community members who came in and expressed gratitude for having a safe space in our community to shop, craft, and just spend time.
You can’t please everyone, but I think we brought some joy to those who needed it. I’m incredibly proud to have been a source of support for folks who needed a voice in our community.
And no, I will not allow comments on my page that disparage our customers, community members, or any marginalized groups. Take some advice from Bambi and if you can’t say something nice just move along- you are obviously not our target audience.
