You've probably underestimated the chicken your whole life. 🐔
We tend to think of them as simple farm animals. But science keeps
revealing just how extraordinary they actually are. A few facts that
surprise almost everyone:
- THEY RECOGNIZE UP TO 100 FACES
Chickens can remember and tell apart around 100 individual faces —
both other chickens AND people. They know who you are.
- THEY SEE MORE COLORS THAN WE DO
Their eyes have more types of color receptors than ours. They
perceive shades of light, including some ultraviolet, that humans
simply can't see.
- THEY FORM REAL BONDS — AND GRIEve
Chickens build close friendships within the flock and have been
observed showing signs of distress when a companion is lost.
- THEY DREAM
Chickens experience REM sleep — the dreaming stage — just like we do.
- THEY NAVIGATE BY THE SUN
They use the position of the sun to orient themselves through the day.
- THEY'RE LIVING COUSINS OF THE DINOSAURS
Birds descended from theropod dinosaurs — the same group as
Tyrannosaurus rex. Look closely at a chicken's scaly legs and sharp
eye, and you're looking at a dinosaur's distant relative.
- THEY'RE FASTER (AND LONGER-LIVED) THAN YOU'D GUESS
A chicken can run up to 9 mph, and a well-cared-for hen can live
well over a decade — some reaching 16 years.
A remarkable blend of instinct, emotion, and evolutionary brilliance
— hiding in plain sight in backyards everywhere.
