🧀📚 EDUCATIONAL SUNDAY: WHAT IS A CHEESE GRADER?

Here’s a little piece of Vern’s history you may not know!

Vern’s owner, Ben Novak, is Licensed Wisconsin Cheese Grader #520.

But #520 isn't just a number. It was also the cheese grader number held by Ben’s grandfather, William Novak — making it a pretty special piece of the Novak family’s history in Wisconsin cheese.

So…what exactly does a Cheese Grader do?

A Licensed Cheese Grader is trained to evaluate cheese for characteristics such as flavor, body, texture, color, appearance and overall quality — determining whether a cheese meets the standards expected for its variety.

And that expertise is still put to work at Vern’s today!

Ben works alongside our Cheese Buyer, Crystal Pulos, an American Cheese Society Certified Cheese Professional®, to review and approve the cheeses we purchase and bring to our customers.

Between a Licensed Wisconsin Cheese Grader and an ACS Certified Cheese Professional®, there's a whole lot of cheese knowledge behind what earns a spot at Vern’s.
