Featuring writing and artistic practices that trace the racialized and gendered relationship between bodies and land, A Grammar Built with Rocks explores artists’ engagement with sites of physical dispossession and socio-ecological crisis, highlighting how creative research methodologies can serve as radically new place-making practices

SHE WILL LAST AS LONG AS STONES by kathy wu

Weaving together the matter of geology, migration, and computation, kathy wu’s debut book She Will Last as Long as Stones mines data from the United States Geological Survey, pairing it with (mis)translations of conversations with the author’s mother, narratives of racialized and gendered labor, and elegies on end-of-life care. Through text, photo-collage, and diagrammatic circuitry, wu mobilizes language toward the edges of things, where glitch and failure meet grief, outpour.

fresh out the kiln! a third edition (new and improved with film stills) of Building Material: A Brick Reader 🧱🔥 an accompanimient to Harun Farocki’s IN COMPARISON, the reader gathers brick assosciations and observes brick comparisons via a survey of their production processes across societies, as benchmarks for notions of culture, time, progress, and labor

“I looked for an object that had not changed too much in the past few thousand years. This could have been a shoe or a knife, but a brick becomes part of a building and therefore part of our environment. So the brick appears as something of a poetic object.” – Harun Farocki

The book’s content produces a structure from which we can examine the multiplicity of ways that bricks are produced, used, and viewed. Stills from Harun Farocki’s In Comparison correspond with writing on the geographic and economic factors of brick in society; the poetics, fictions, and visions of a brick stacker; a forum’s effort to create a communal archive; the pedagogical brick; the speculative commodity of clay; as well as reproductions of bricks and their sites of production. By monitoring the transformation of geological matter into clay, clay to brick, and brick to building, the book aims to stage comparison between processes inherent to bricks with other methods of knowledge production such as film, writing, and publishing.
