Brown Babies Books

Brown Babies Books Brown Babies Books is Black, woman-owned indie children's bookstore Our Founder Tameca's favorite book as a child was Corduroy. Why?

While the book featured a storyline about a cute little brown teddy bear from a department store toy aisle with a desire to be purchased; it’s not what made the book her favorite. Nope, Corduroy was cute, but Lisa is what drew her to the story and captured her attention. Because Lisa looked like her- a little brown girl with freshly pressed hair, a frugal mother, and a determination to get the ted

dy bear of her dreams. It was the first time Tameca had seen a black/brown character in a storybook. Even at the age of 4, she knew the importance of that piece. That is when her love of reading began and ultimately led to the creation of Brown Babies Books.

Anyone up for a fun 2026 reading challenge? The goal is to read a book based on each month’s specific theme. Up first, a favorite of mine: Middle grade fantasy.

The week in reverse.

As we say goodnight on the last day of Kwanzaa, I am reflective and hopeful at the same time. 2025 brought great joy but also loss, grief and some really anxiety provoking stresses.

But as we close out Kwanzaa on my favorite principle of the week - IMANI, I have hope and gratitude.

While Kwanzaa is not a religious celebration, it provides me with a connection to my community, my elders, my family, friends and my ancestors, which always connects and reflects my faith and belief in God. It is who I am, where I’ve been and where I’m headed.

“ I would have fainted, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.” Psalm 27:13

That passage sums up the end of my 2025 and my faith propels me into 2026 committed to continuing the vision that was laid before me with love for my people, my family, our communities and this nation.

When we come together and commit ourselves to love one another, share our talents & resources, and support each other fully - WE WIN! 🤎🖤
