With the Strait of Hormuz dominating the headlines, the geography shown here feels remarkably familiar.

This 1958 World Oil – Middle East Oil Map lays out the early framework of pipelines, fields, and concessions that would define how oil was developed and exported from the region. It notes key shared interests, including Kharg Island and the Iran Pan American (IPAC) concession, a 50/50 partnership between Pan American (Standard of Indiana) and the National Iranian Oil Company.

Seen today, this map reads less like a snapshot in time and more like the foundation of the modern oil network.

This remarkable and rare double-hemisphere world map by Jacob Aertz Colom is significant not only for its geography, but for its bold visual embrace of the new astronomy. Produced in the mid-17th century, it stands among the earliest printed world maps to prominently illustrate the Copernican system at a time when heliocentrism remained controversial and, in some regions, doctrinally suspect. In doing so, the map transforms the traditional decorative world image into a statement about humanity’s evolving understanding of the cosmos.

Last summer we acquired 30 Sanborn Fire Insurance Atlases of the Chicagoland area. After going through all of the atlases and accounting for every page that was present and missing, the collection was purchased by The University of Chicago.

Since then, students in the University of Chicago’s Chicago Urban Heritage Project have been utilizing the century-old Sanborn fire insurance atlases to digitize and align historic building footprints with modern maps, creating an interactive digital map of Chicago’s neighborhoods. Their work helps reveal how streets, buildings, and entire communities have changed over time, making hidden layers of the city’s history accessible to the public.
