Tone Deafs house hardcore band Ritual Cross has two back to back shows coming up this week, and we are stoked about both! The first night they are playing with Japanese legends Gudon!! Who would have thought?!?! On tour in the midwest only for some reason. Probably the last time they will come to the US. The whole lineup is stellar, one seriously punishing band after another...and its at the best little punk club in town, Casa Cafe. This is on Thursday May 7th. This will sell out fast so get there early. The second show is at the Gallery Cabaret (yeah, they still do shows) and Ritual Cross are playing with the wonderful Rotary Club (on Iron Lung Records and on tour) and playing with two of our fave local bands, both of which have graced the Tone Deaf “stage”, Consensus Madness and Cel Ray. This is a pretty stacked lineup and should be a seriously fun show. This show is Friday May 8th

TONE DEAF PICK OF THE DAY: Anonymous “Inside The Shadow” (Macchu Picchu, 2013) - A beautiful copy of the Machu Picchu Records reissue of this Indianapolis band’s 1976 debut just hit the used bin! Anonymous’s “Inside The Shadow” is an Acid Archives “certified” underheard classic of punchy, rockin’ late Sixties jangle rock, falling to mind bands like The Byrds, Jefferson Airplane or Quicksilver Messenger Service, but with a watchful eye (or is that ear?) toward the forthcoming LA country-rock scene of the early Seventies (more than a little influence of jammier Grateful Dead in here too). Immediately catchy & memorable - you’ll be humming these tunes for days! This was originally a private press release of just 300 copies, so finding an original copy of this is nigh impossible, and if you do, VERY VERY expensive, but you can nab this gem for $25! HIGHLY recommended! (Bill)

Tone Deaf Pick of the Day: Stalk-Forrest Group “St Cecilia: The Elektra Recordings” 2xLP - Of all the Record Store Day exclusive releases from a few weeks back (and there were A TON), this one was the one we were the most excited about…and for some reason it got ignored by the masses. Stalk-Forrest Group were Blue Oyster Cult before they became BOC. They recorded one album, the label shelved it, they changed their name and the rest is history…history being one of the best rock bands of all time. This is an official copy of said shelved album with a bunch of extras and demo tracks….and it fu***ng rules. It’s basically another BOC album culled from their early years (our favorite) and fits perfectly right next to Secret Treaties, Tyranny and Mutation and the debut album. If you love BOC like we do then this is totally essential. Complex songs, flying solos, killer musicianship, it has it all. It can get a bit hippie at times (prolly listening to the Dead a but too much, or drugs are to blame) but it fits in nicely. We have a few copies left from RSD then they are gone!!!

Tone Deaf Pick of the Day: Christian Bland & The Revelators “The Unseen Green Obscene” LP - We got in a nice affordable used copy of this psych rock gem. Christian Bland is one of the Black Angels and has a series of excellent solo releases that are well worth picking up if you are a Black Angels fan, or a fan of sixties drug influenced psych pop. Serious Nuggets and Syd Barrett worship all over this. Stony vibes, perfect mid-fi production, great songs. This record is a total peach. Get it before it’s gone!!

Tone Deaf Pick of the Day: Joshua Abrams “Music For Pulse Meridian Foliation” LP. Local composer & de facto president of our local chapter of The Natural Information Society, releasing a rare solo outing, composed for NIS member Lisa Alvarado’s 2023 art exhibition at LA gallery space REDCAT (Alvarado provides the visual artwork for NIS’s albums and their live backdrops & visuals). Alvarado’s exhibition explored “how memory can be transformed through the body’s relationship to geography and geology, as well as engaging with the concept of Nepantla (in-between).” “Foliation” is the process in which extreme environmental pressures on rocks cause splitting. This idea of “environmental pressures” is used to examine her family’s memory of “Mexican Repatriation”, where the state pressured a family to move until it splintered. Abrams’ soundtrack for the exhibition is a long 30-minute+ piece composed for two violas, harmonium, and electronics & was intended for looped playback on four channels as onlookers viewed the art within the space. While perhaps not quite as “groovy” or rhythmic as your typical NIS album, “Music For Pulse Meridian Foliation” is an immersive and, at times, claustrophobic listen, as the violas converse with one another in overlapping layers, over top the droning harmonium & electronics. Think ‘modern composition’ over ‘spiritual jazz’ & you’ll get a better sense of what this one’s all about. TRULY FANTASTIC! (Bill)
