Manual at home: whats on our bar? Most of our spirits hide out in the cabinet below, but on deck is our infinity bottle of bourbon (always topped up with everyday selections), a bottle of mezcal I picked up in Mexico a few months ago at my brother’s bachelor party, an amaro our friends at @nourishingnotes gifted me for my birthday last year, a Japanese whisky (which reminds me I want to find rice whisky—I had some at @insheepsclothinghifi a few months back and I can’t stop thinking about it), a little bottle of @drinkhaus (an interesting aperitif subscription service a friend gifted me) and finally a decanter of gin (because ramp gibsons). Happy Friday, have a drink—you deserve it. 🍸

Manual at home: one of my favorite spots in our 1938 Art Moderne style house is the stairwell with the round window. Depending on the time of year, the light passes through the leaded glass and casts an oval on different walls of the space in different shades and intensities. Like a slow moving clock, the slowly changing shapes and locations are rooted in the seasons—and it’s one of those small details that I love noticing as the years go by.

Manual at home: a Sunday morning brew of home roasted Guatemalan coffee (from @burmancoffeetraders, roasted on a @behmor in my garage). If you’ve never home roasted before, take a look at some of the info out there (especially @sweetmarias) it’s surprisingly easy, and makes you feel incredibly self-sufficient. Plus you get the freshest coffee possible. ☕️

Hi there, I’m @craightonberman the person behind Manual. Just like most of the US I’m sheltering in place—here I am in my living room with some early prototypes of the Framework plant stands (BTW the Kickstarter is 91% funded!) 🌿 To my right is Norman the dog. Taking the photo is my wife Emily (a personal chef at @feedingthefirebelly who’s now temporarily a homeschool teacher) Just out of frame are my two sons (Chicago public schools are cancelled for the year). Since we’re all stuck at home, this week I’m going to share snapshots of how we use Manual products around our house. Stay tuned and thanks for supporting small biz in these hard times.✌️

‘Framework' is a line of plant stands designed to hold potted houseplants in a variety of interesting and unexpected ways. Many of us are spending way more time at home than ever before, however caring for houseplants can be a ‘slow ritual’ that can bring you some calm in uncertain times. Cocktails for a Spring Quarantine — the Freestyle
If you’re anything like I am, you have dozens of underutilized (and somewhat obscure) bottles of booze in your liquor cabinet. And since it’s not exactly top priority to go out and re-up our long-ago depleted bourbon reserves, it’s time to get creative. I decided to freestyle a sort of rickey—lime and soda water are the base, and I layered in equal parts sweet, bitter and strong. Sweet was taken care of by Creme de Noyaux, an almond-flavored liqueur. My bitter component was Suze—an apéritif made from the gentian root that has a grapefruity vibe. Finally I busted out some powerful absinthe for the strong element. How was it? Not going to win any mixology awards, but pleasantly drinkable—and I made it up myself! So step outside the recipe and try a formula: citrus, sweet, bitter and strong—topped with soda. See what happens. Good luck.

PS The cocktail glasses and the mixing glass pictured are on sale the next few weeks. Get mixing!

Cocktails for a Spring Quarantine — the Ramp Gibson
Early Spring is when wild ramps start popping up in the Midwest, and ramp foraging season is usually only a few weeks long—so we figured we were out of luck in this season of stay-at-home orders. However our friend (and collaborator) behind @potluckcreative came through with a socially distanced surprise ramp delivery!
We decided to celebrate with a Ramp Gibson: 2 ounces gin, 1/2 ounce dry vermouth, garnished with a pickled ramp from last year’s harvest. And yes, you should eat the onion—bad breath doesn’t matter when you’re not going anywhere.

PS The decanter and the mixing glass pictured are 25-33% off for the next few weeks.

Cocktails for a Spring Quarantine — the Americano.
If you’re in the large group of people that’s lucky enough to be sitting at home right now, this afternoon calls for an aperitivo. The Americano is a straightforward, low-alcohol refresher for the golden hours as late afternoon transitions to early evening—great for taking the edge off (and we’re all feeling edgy right now). Glass full of ice, glug of sweet vermouth, glug of Campari, top off with soda water. Repeat as necessary.

PS The Manual cocktail glasses pictured are 25% off for the next few weeks.
