November is Native American Heritage Month!

In 1990 President George H.W. Bush approved a joint resolution designating November “National American Indian Heritage Month.” Over the past thirty plus years similar proclamations, under variants on the name including “Native American Heritage Month” and “National American Indian and Alaska Native Heritage Month” have been issued each year.

Native American Heritage Month is celebrated to honor the contributions and influence they have had on the advancement of our nation, and to celebrate the diverse and rich cultures, histories, and traditions of Native Americans, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and Island communities.

This month allows us to spread awareness about unique, diverse tribes as well as educate people about the history and challenges faced by the Native Americans in the past and today.

Did you know?
• Juneteenth’s significance dates back to June 19th, 1865, the day federal troops led by Major General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas and publicly read General Order No. 3 proclaiming that the 250,000 enslaved people living in the state were free.
• Originally, Juneteenth was celebrated by helping newly freed Black Americans learn their voting rights. Today, Juneteenth is celebrated primarily with cookouts, parades, and church services. Rodeos and horseback riding are also ways to celebrate that originated in Texas.
• Since June is also LGBT Pride Month, Black Pride celebrations often take place over the course of Juneteenth weekend.

This year we are featuring an image of the Juneteenth flag. The design includes:
• A star representing the Lone Star State and freedom for Black Americans in all 50 states.
• A burst surrounding the star, inspired by what astrologers refer to as a “nova” or new star, representing a new beginning for all Black Americans starting with those in Galveston, Texas.
• The arc representing a new horizon for promise and opportunities for Black Americans.
• The colors red, white, and blue represent the American flag and its promise of freedom being extended to formerly enslaved Black Americans and their decedents.
