The emergence of spring is a tangible reminder that even in darkness, roots grow deeper as they tap into vast interconnected networks of nourishment, even as conditions appear stagnant above ground. Our interconnections and networks of care melt the carceral violence of Empire.

[Image description: A colorful digital illustration depicting spring ephemeral flowers native to Turtle Island: Shooting Star, Bloodroot, Yellow Trout Lily, Jack-in-the-Pulpit, Large-Flowered Trillium, Wild Blue Phlox and Blue Flag Iris spread their roots to melt a block ice. In the foreground are smaller pieces of broken and melting ice. Large block text at the bottom reads, “ABOLISH ICE”.]

I haven’t made a personal piece in a long while. It’s been a heavy season of shedding, grieving, and slowly unfurling toward winter while juggling client projects. I hope to share more someday.

It feels important to mark today by sharing work I’ve been holding close for months. This piece is for us who are misunderstood by people who cannot hold our beauty. We are eternal, the way land is eternal.

May you feel held in every stage of your transformation. And even if belonging among people feels out of reach, remember: you belong to nature.

The trees know your true form.
The waters stretch to hold every
iteration of your becoming.
The stars carry the same miracle
that lives in your body.

I was introduced to the work of Hêlîn Asî through a comrade who facilitated a recent gathering of liberatory love. We read revolutionary texts aloud and wrote love letters to the past, present and future. It cracked me open like a ripe watermelon, and I have been nurturing this sweet recognition of love ever since. Love, maybe even now more than ever, is our medicine. Now is the time to practice our love ethic—especially since we are up against people who want to erase our empathy for one another. We must remember that love connects all beings of this universe. May you connect with the infinite love of the universe that is bursting inside of you.

Now is the time to reach into our imaginations and devise creative ways we can continue to refuse injustice together because our refusal is never isolated. We move as a hive. Behind each of our refusals is a lineage of our ancestors thrumming their fists, and stomping their feet, and raising their voices to resist and refuse with us.

Day 3 - The Soil Bleeds Blue

My final sketch for is for the Democratic Republic of Congo. Depicted are native and/or endemic flora of the DRC, including (from left to right) Protea gaguedi (African sugarbush), Strophanthus eminii (Emin’s strophanthus), and the argyrella canescens (Marsh Dissotis).

As I dive deeper into political education, I am immensely inspired by the life and words of Patrice Lumumba. He was the first elected prime minister of the DRC when Congo gained its independence from Belgian rule in 1960. Lumumba fiercely believed and fought for African unity and Congolese self-determination from colonial forces. Through the influence of Western powers, he was assassinated in 1961 for his revolutionary leadership and ability to galvanize the working class. His life and legacy are an enduring symbol of African unity and continue to inspire global solidarity against colonialization.

Day 2: Where The Hibiscus Flowers Grow

Through my research for this piece, I learned of Mahjoub Sharif’s revolutionary words and life. He is considered to be the “People’s Poet of Sudan” and spent a considerable portion of his life imprisoned for his opposition to fascist regimes and political oppression. His legacy continues through music, poetry, and the enduring spirit of the Sudanese people.

*

I was drawn to the native and endemic flora of Sudan, (from left to right) hibiscus sabdariffa, aloe sinkatana, and the okra plant. If you noticed the hibiscus and okra flowers are similar—you’re right! They are related; both are in the mallow family.

Day 1: The Olive Tree Will Outlive The Empire
Illustrating this piece reminds me of nature’s persistence in continuing life. Despite empire’s attempts to change the names of the flowers, trees, and waters, the natural world will always belong to the people and itself. Pictured here are native plants to Palestine, the Faqqua Iris, an Olive branch/tree, and Tulipa Aegensis (which Isrl attempts to rename the “Isrli Tulip”).

In ’s words, “We existed before Zio*ist colonial invasion. We exist now even among the rubble of humanity’s remains. We will exist when Zio*ism is dismantled, bit by every racist colonial bit.”
