For David Shelist, owner of the Denim Lounge, three qualities make up a great pair of jeans: comfort, durability and wash. However, in 2001, he was unable to find jeans that met all these criteria in his area of Chicago. So, like any good entrepreneur, David converted the basement of Madison & Friends (the children’s clothing store he owned with his wife, Wendi) into the Denim Loun

ge. From the newly-converted basement David began selling denim lines previously unavailable in the current market. His stock included several brands he discovered, and fell in love with, on a trip to New York City. “You could get these lines in Chicago department stores, but I wanted them right here in our area of town,” says David. Thirteen years later, the Denim Lounge is going strong. Now out of the basement and entirely a denim and casual apparel store, the Denim Lounge offers Chicago’s most fashionable men, women, and kids a place to shop for top lines in denim, tops, dresses, sportswear and accessories. Nestled in Chicago’s cozy Roscoe Village neighborhood, the Denim Lounge makes jean shopping a stress-free experience. With two comfy denim couches, three large flat-screen TVs and a beer fridge, how could it not be? Plus, there’s the world famous “butt cam,” which is pretty much what you think it is: a live-feed video camera that lets you see for yourself just how good you look in a pair of blues. Also, with more than 15 brands to choose from and 60 years of combined fashion experience, the staff at the Denim Lounge make finding your next favorite pair of jeans “painless and simple,”.

“We want the experience of jean shopping to be as easy and comfortable as the products we sell,” says Shelist, adding that the Denim Lounge is very kid and dog friendly (don’t worry, both are kept out of the beer fridge). I realized early that this man was special. Not only was I blessed to have, Howard Gordon, as my Father in Law, but my mentor in business. His dedication to his family, employees and customers have guided everything we believe in as a business. It’s always and your work ethic next. Howard taught me to work as hard you can, but to also enjoy the fruits of your labor. I will continue to honor his legacy. He was a great man that I will miss tremendously.
