Action Comics No. 1—the first appearance of Superman--published in 1938. A recent copy sold for $175,000! A 1940 Batman No. 1 sold for a staggering $567,625! Are comics the contemporary equivalent of a blue chip stock? The views are mixed. For a highly-graded vintage copy, the sky may be the limit. Otherwise, don't expect that basement stash to fund your retirement!

Could a glass bottle fund your retirement? Vintage bottles are big business. If you think that your bottle is an antique, get a professional appraisal. And remember, clean bottles mean cold cash. Sick glass looks etched, often resulting from decay and mineral deposits accumulating over time from exposure to the elements. A valuable piece can be restored and stabilized.

Most grandparents would probably fund a college account for their grandkids instead of giving them a teddy bear. But not all bears are created equal. Steiff bears are highly collectible. Vintage Steiff toys from the company’s earlier years have sold at auction for more than $100,000. And an atypical Titanic "Mourning Bear" to commemorate the victims of that ocean liner disaster will reportedly sell for as much as $40,000 at an upcoming auction. Time to search through those attics!

The United States Postal Service might not seem like a haven for collectors, but that's what happened when the agency required badges to be worn by letter carriers in the 1880s. Although the practice was discontinued after some 95 years, the market for these metal or plastic pins rages on.
