The Almost Annual Crappie Derby has been canceled for 2023.

We have been close to pulling off this event for the last two years, only to have it canceled days before as warmer temperatures caused shifts and breaks in the ice at the shoreline making it unsafe to get folks on and off the ice!
We hold the derby on this day as it is a FREE fishing day granted through NYS DEC, no need to purchase a fishing license! This is one reason we don’t have a second date setup in case Feb 18th doesn’t work out. We are all volunteers through our Whitney Point Sportsmens Association so there is a lot of coordination to pull off the derby and it is too much to try to have a second date as a backup in case of cancellation. Thank You for understanding this and fingers crossed we can have some cold temperatures!

Due to flooding and very unsafe ice conditions along with ice separation from the shore the Almost Annual Crappie Derby has been cancelled for 2022!!

Crappie derby

It looks like the Almost Annual Crappie Derby is on. Don't worry if you don't have a fishing license because it's also NYS DEC Free Fishing Day.

UPDATE: February 14th
Ice is still measuring 14” therefore we are moving ahead with the derby! HOWEVER, there is a potential for rain on Thursday and we do not know the amounts. This Crappie Derby could be postponed if conditions are not safe! Mother Nature controls the weather, not us! We are crossing our fingers to have this derby, we have not had it since 2018 and are excited and staying positive that we can have the Almost Annual Crappie Derby in 2022!

UPDATE: February 9th
Measured 14” of ice, some areas up to 16”. We have warmer temperatures coming in through the next week which could affect the measurements and quality of ice! Monday the 14th is the official measurement date with Broome County officials that determines if the Almost Annual Crappie Derby is a GO!!!

UPDATE: February 2nd
Measured 11” of ice. We are moving forward! Hope for continued cold temperatures!

UPDATE: January 26th
Ice measurements vary, we have a consistent 71/2" with some sloppy slush on top of that.
We need a good 12" of ice to have our event!
We have some warm ups this week of Jan 31st then temperatures will be dropping again. Until we get our website up to date, we will post information here.
