Sometimes a second chapter leads to something beautiful.

Upcycle CHQ Maker Spotlight today is on Sue Davis-Gillis of Nutmeg Hollow.

Meet Sue Davis-Gillis of Dewittville, one of the makers in the UpcycleCHQ Maker Program and the creator behind Nutmeg Hollow, a small business that combines creativity, craftsmanship, and a love for giving materials a second life.

After taking early retirement, Sue decided to build something meaningful from the treasures she discovered at estate sales, thrift stores, and yard sales. Today, she creates embroidery kits and projects designed to help others discover the joy, beauty, and calmness of needle arts.

What makes her work special is that many of the materials already had a life before they found their way into her hands.

- Wool jackets and skirts become appliqués
- Vintage wool clothing is carefully repurposed
- Buttons, zippers, and embellishments are rescued and reused
- Approximately 70% of her creations are made from thoughtfully repurposed materials

Sue is also an experienced sewist who has spent years sewing clothing and quilts. Her love of embroidery and appliqué shines through every project she creates.

One of the things we love most about Sue's work is that no two pieces are exactly alike. Because she works with materials she finds and rescues, each project reflects the unique story of those materials and the creativity required to transform them into something new.

Through Nutmeg Hollow, Sue isn't just making products—she's helping keep traditional skills alive and inspiring others to pick up a needle, create something with their hands, and see the potential in materials that might otherwise be overlooked.

Thank you, Sue, for being part of the Upcycle CHQ Maker Program and for showing how creativity, craftsmanship, and reuse can come together in such a meaningful way.

Have you ever learned embroidery, sewing, quilting, or another needle art from a family member or friend? We'd love to hear your story in the comments.

Another beautiful furniture repair and restoration project completed by The Upholstery Place

What could have ended up at a landfill has instead been given a second life through skill, craftsmanship, and a commitment to reuse.

This is what the reuse economy looks like:
-Repair instead of replace
- Restore instead of discard
- Keep valuable materials out of the waste stream

Every piece repaired is one less piece of furniture headed to a dump site—and one more example of how local skills can help reduce waste while preserving quality items.

Great work by The Upholstery Place once again!

Do you have a piece of furniture that needs repair or restoration? Maybe it’s worth saving.

What started as a simple idea—to celebrate reuse, repair, upcycling, and local creativity—has grown into a community of makers, repairers, gardeners, artists, sewers, homesteaders, and people who believe that things still have value.

So now we’re asking…

Who will become our 1,000th follower?

If that’s you, let us know in the comments when you join!

And if you’ve been with us from the beginning, tell us:
What has been your favorite UpcycleCHQ post, maker, challenge, or story so far?

Thank you to everyone who has followed, shared, donated materials, taught a skill, entered a challenge, attended an event, or simply cheered us on.

We love and appreciate every one of you💚

What if economic development started with the assets like materials and skills already in our communities?

The UpcycleCHQ Maker Pilot Program is exploring this idea:

Connect reusable materials, local skills, makers, community groups, and markets to create products, activate micro-enterprises, and keep more value circulating within our communities.

Rather than seeing waste, we see resources.
Rather than seeing hobbies, we see skills.
Rather than seeing individuals, we see makers, entrepreneurs, and future business owners.

Over the next 12 weeks, 25 makers and community groups across Chautauqua County will transform donated materials into products under the MADE IN CHQ identity while exploring pathways to local production, entrepreneurship, and economic opportunity.

We believe this model has the potential to help small communities activate hidden assets, support local makers, strengthen community connections, and create new opportunities for micro-enterprise development.

One thing we’ve discovered through Upcycle CHQ is that our community is full of talented people with incredible skills and experiences to share.

From sewing and gardening to canning, woodworking, crocheting, painting, repairing, and so much more, there is a wealth of knowledge right here around us.

We’re curious…

What’s a skill you’ve always wanted to learn, but never had the chance?

You never know—someone in this community may be willing to teach it.

Creativity, Collaboration & Clay: A Visit to Kniti Griti Works by Marcia Merrins.

A few weekends ago, while exploring the North Shore Arts Alliance Art Trail, one of our stops was Hub #4 in Fredonia—Kniti Griti Works, home and studio of ceramic artist Marcia Merrins.

What immediately stood out to us was not only Marcia’s beautiful hand-built ceramic work, but also her willingness to share her space with other artists. Her spacious property hosted two additional artists during the Art Trail, creating a welcoming and collaborative environment that we loved seeing.

Marcia creates a wide range of hand-built ceramic pieces from her studio in Fredonia, where she operates her own kilns and continues to create new work on a regular basis. Each piece reflects the care, creativity, and craftsmanship that comes from an artist dedicated to her craft.

One thing we appreciate about makers like Marcia is that their work isn’t mass-produced. Each piece is created by hand, making every item unique and personal.

If you’d like to learn more about Marcia, view her work, or inquire about purchasing a piece, visit:

Thank you, Marcia, for welcoming visitors into your creative space and for helping make the Art Trail such a special experience.
